New Chances for Children: Thien (Vietnam)

Hunger Victim To Food Scientist!
Thien, now a third year university student, is everyone's  idea of a real success story. She grew up in an extremely poor family in rural Vietnam. Thien's mother and father are rice farmers, and she never expected her own future to stray from her parents' meager existence. Thien's family's resources were so limited that her older sister did the unthinkable, taking her own life so their parents would have one less mouth to feed. To cope with her immense grief, Thien chose to honor her sister's memory through dedication to her studies and future career. She is fulfilling her dream to be a food scientist. Thien's aim is to help ensure that people in her country and community have ready access to healthy food.

When we met Thien, she was so excruciatingly shy that she barely spoke above a whisper. Even the interpreter, a Vietnamese staff member, could hardly hear her replies to questions. After Thien humbly mentioned that she was excelling in her chemistry classes, we suggested that one day she might be the top scientist in her country. As she heard the interpreter's words, Thien came alive, audibly gasping and opening her eyes wide. She imagined the mere possibility of this success as her future. Thien's wide grin and excitement said it all!

As a recipient of Chances for Children International funding Thien is advancing in her university studies. She works hard and continues to remain at the top of her class. With ongoing support and dedication, Thien is excited by her future chances for success for herself, her family and community as a food scientist.

CCI supports young women attend university
Program Partner Amigos de Santa Cruz in Guatemala helps a growing number of young women reach their
once unattainable dream of attending university.

Exciting Program Updates

An abundance of good news for you! Our Program Partners report that CCI-supported children and youth -- mostly girls and young women -- are successfully forging ahead with their studies with CCI's support, as indicated in the above photo from Guatemala. We continually receive stories about each student's educational achievements. Just as important, their ever-increasing self-confidence and self-esteem are celebrated.

Similar to Thien in Vietnam, CCI will highlight children's stories in all the other programs in future news.

You can read the update on each Program Partner by clicking on the names below:

Performance-Based Strategic Focus

While we are thrilled with CCI's results and successful program funding these past three years, we won't stop here. Our 2019 strategic planning led us to reach for even greater performance and sustainable impact. One of our specific goals is to educate a minimum of 25% more children during the 2019-2020 academic year. In addition, we are targeting additional funds for our Partner Programs in Guatemala and  Vietnam, both poised for expansion. We favor these countries given the historical impact of U.S. policy in these countries. The four grassroots partner programs we chose are building better futures for children and youth, especially girls, by empowering them with education and skills to uplift themselves, as well as their families and communities. We'll be back to you to report on our results.

CCI's New Advisory Board

Big news! Our new Advisory Board met this summer at our mountainside New Hampshire farm. Our  members include a major foundation executive and several business CEOs. Collectively, they challenged CCI to focus its strategies on expanding programs so more children grow up educated, self-sufficient and confident. Click below for details on each Board member.

How CCI Stands Out From Other Education Programs
  • CCI is the only such organization where 100% of your donations go directly to child education programs. All other expenses (administration, travel, etc.) required to operate CCI are funded by our private philanthropy.
  • CCI funds only successful local grassroots organizations which provide access to high quality education.
  • CCI programs are so efficient that $240 supports a child's education for an entire year.
  • CCI closely monitors its programs firsthand to measure and ensure the results on students and their communities.

We Are Grateful To All Our Generous Supporters

Thanks to supporters like you, our programs help children around the world realize new chances to fulfill their potential. You inspire us to work harder and reach higher. We welcome you to celebrate our students' successes by sharing this news with your families and friends.
