Camp CUMCITO Internship

Camp CUMCITO is an opportunity unlike many kids from the urban core get to experience. CUMCITO is an acronym for City Union Mission’s Camp in the Ozarks, and is  located in Warsaw, Missouri. It serves children ages 4 to 16 years old.  They are given a chance to worship in God’s creation in a loving and safe place, with unique opportunities which may include but are not limited to: tent-camping, fishing, swimming, and archery.  It takes a lot of  teamwork to make the 7 weeks of Camp CUMCITO work!

 Perseverance, leadership, and mental strength are characteristics that are commonly found and built at CUMCITO, and they remind you that you are working towards a goal bigger than yourselves: sharing the gospel with the kids. Camp CUMCITO interns will serve 7 weeks at our residential camp near Warsaw, MO and 4 weeks in Kansas City.  In the city, team meetings, classes, field trips, and preparation are required in addition to work assignments.  This is truly an intense, challenging, and rewarding experience!


This residential internship might be for you if you:

City Camp Internship

City Camp is a 9-week day camp that serves at risk youth in Kansas City's urban core.  It is geared toward sharing the Gospel with students age 7-18 through hands on learning which encourages spiritual, educational, emotional, and social growth.  Interns, volunteers, and staff lead and walk along side youth as they explore together the depth of Christ's love.  This love is shown in many ways, such as: the feeding of meals, recreation, engaging education, and even in enforcing loving discipline.  City Camp interns will lead activities for students and will gain and strengthen skills that can be applied in many contexts. Some skills you many gain or strengthen as a City Camp Intern are: classroom leadership and management, creativity, time management, communication, team work, evangelism, discipleship, teaching, conflict resolution, encouragement, positive reinforcement,  and non-violent crisis intervention.

Our City Camp Internship might be for you if you:
  • Your career path is education, social services, urban ministry, or any form of children's services

Rescue Ministry Internship

Rescue Ministry Internship (RMI)  is small but mighty! RMI covers the business and behind the scenes sides of a non-profit homeless ministry and community development.   Rescue Ministry Interns will have a blended job assignment.  Our goal is to expose them to the big picture of rescue ministry at City Union Mission by rotating to a new job assignment every three weeks.  In addition to educational/intentional community activities with other interns,
Rescue Ministry Interns will serve 2 days under the supervision of the Camp CUMCITO Registrar (camper registration, send-off, and return), 2 evenings with shelter children (lessons and activities), and 3 days on their rotating assignment.  Over the summer, each intern will be assigned to 3 jobs ...for 3 weeks, each.  Rotating job assignments should include one of each type of job including: client contact/front-line, operations (physical needs), and administration.

The Rescue Ministry internship may be for you if:

  • You are interested in nonprofit work as a whole

  • You have a heart for the poor and homeless

  • You are willing to do tasks that do not receive much credit with thankfulness and a cheerful heart

  • You are a social services major

  • You are interested in learning more about various areas of ministry, i.e. bookkeeping, food services, security, shelter management, client services, etc.

Development Internship

City Union Mission’s Development Internship is a structured nine to twelve weeks from Jan - May, May – August; or August – December. Interns work Monday through Friday 8:00AM to 4:00PM.

The goal of this internship is to help students further cultivate their skills through experience at a national non-profit. You will experience working with City Union Mission’s nine member development team. City Union Mission is a non-profit ministry operating on a $11 million budget reaching out to those who are poor or homeless in Kansas City, MO. You will also learn the value of long range planning and the day to day ministry. 

The development intern must have a positive attitude and eagerness to learn about fundraising and donor relations strategies. Knowledge of the non-profit sector and fundraising, either through coursework or professional experience is a must; volunteer experience preferred.

Information Technology (IT) Internship

City Union Mission’s IT Internship is a structured nine to twelve weeks from Jan - May, May – August; or August – December. Interns work Monday through Friday 8:00AM to 4:00PM.

The goal of this internship is to help students further cultivate their skills through experience at a nationally known, technology forward non-profit. You will experience working with City Union Mission’s IT team.

The IT intern must have a positive attitude and eagerness to learn about IT integration in the non-profit world. Basic IT skills in the non-profit sector, either through coursework or professional experience is a plus; volunteer experience preferred.

Counseling Internship

City Union Mission’s Counseling Internship varies according to the Family Center needs and the Counseling Intern’s total supervision hours to be completed.

The goal of this internship is to provide the Intern Counselor with access to a counseling caseload to assist him/her in reaching the goal of required degree completion hours and to assist the staff to provide the required professional counseling that result in meeting the needs of the poor and homeless. 

This internship will provide opportunities to:
  • Share the transforming power of the gospel into the lives of those we serve
  • Experience in using a variety of therapy tools and techniques that match the needs of the clients
  • Express empathy and support to those in crisis
  • Demonstrate clear knowledge of treatment assignment on a weekly basis to assist the client in their goals
  • Monitor healthy or unhealthy changes throughout the sessions
  • Reassess client’s process in traumatic experiences
  • Explore, reframe, and redirect negative behaviors
  • Experience working with an on-site multi-disciplinary recovery team
  • Facilitate the group process to negotiate group goals, outcomes and ground rules within the context of the individual needs and objectives of the group
Qualifications:

Food Services and Hospitality Management Internship

The goal of this internship is to help students further cultivate their skills through experience at a nationally known, technology forward non-profit. You will experience working with City Union Mission’s IT team.

The Food Service intern must have a positive attitude and eagerness to learn about quantity cooking with quality taste, food storage, and warehousing food. Knowledge of cooking and the non-profit sector is helpful. You will experience working with City Union Mission’s food services team.

  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Basic computer skills including email.
  • Proficiency in basic culinary skills is a plus
