A New Way of Thinking
Welcome New Subscribers!
Sometimes we need to look at parts of life from a new perspective.
I travel more now than I ever thought I would be able to, but I also travel differently. I've made physical changes, but also mental ones.
One small physical change is that I usually travel without checking luggage - at least on the way to my destination. It takes some adjustment in what and how I pack, but it's worth it.  Until you try it, you can't imagine the freedom it gives.
A larger change is the attitude with which I travel.  I love the quote this week - I always try to remember it when travel. I continually strive to be more aware of the people in the country I am visiting and treat them with respect. How do they see me? I want them to see that I care about them and the issues that are important to them.
I think at this time, we should also be more caring here at home. Social media seems to have become a place for some to express their anger while hiding behind a computer screen. As I scroll down my Facebook feed, there is one angry post after another. "Hear what this person said!" "Look what that person did!" "They will be ruined for sure!" It just makes me sad. As a country, we have some serious choices to make in a few weeks - choices for which many of us would like to see another option.
We don't have another option, but maybe we can develop a new way of thinking.  We have friends and relatives who may seem to be backing the opposing side.  Please don't treat them with the hatred that the media is modeling.  When the election is over, they will still be our friends and relatives. Let's work on building bridges of peace and cooperation now.
Stop the media hatred.  It's time for a new perspective, and a new way of thinking. Or maybe we all just need a vacation.

"When you travel, remember that a foreign country is not designed to make you comfortable. It is designed to make its own people comfortable."

This Week's Post:

"This Will Change Your Life"

Although the number of tour participants was small this year, none of them had ever traveled outside of North America.  One of the participants repeated several times that, “This [tour] will change your life.”  I’m sure it was meant broadly – that travel to Europe on a tour like the one I presented can be life changing – rather than only my particular tour.  But I do agree that this type of travel can change your life.

How Travel Changes Your Life

Travel to Europe has changed my life in ways I did not expect.  It has made me more aware, more attentive, and more accepting.

The first time I traveled abroad, I met distant relatives that a year before, I didn’t even know existed.  We became friends and though we rarely see each other, we still remain connected through email...

Liquids in Your Carry-on Bag

After my post last week, I started thinking about the rules for carry-on luggage.  If you follow my advice to pack light, you may be concerned about the amount of liquids you are allowed to bring on the plane.  The allowance may seem small, but there are ways to make it work.

Shortly after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) was formed and new rules were put into place that called for better passenger screening.   Many items, such as sharp objects and sports equipment like baseball bats and hockey sticks, were banned from the passenger cabin.

In 2006, more rules were added that disallowed lighter fluid, paint thinner and other flammables.  At that time the limitation on personal liquids was also put into place...
