Hello Rainbow Network Community,
It’s May 17 today which means … IDAHOBIT !
The International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexphobia and Transphobia and this years theme is Together: Resisting, Supporting, Healing!
It is a day on which people all over the world celebrate the resilience of LGBTQIA+ communities and draw attention to the changes we need to see in the fight against discrimination.
These things are the work many of you are doing every day of the year, and we would like to acknowledge the commitment and dedication of the LGBTIQA+ youth sector that extends beyond the rainbow cupcakes and flag raising ceremonies. Of course these ceremonies are also important, and we hope that whatever IDAHOBIT events you have on today are well attended, run smoothly and that you have a chance to celebrate the wins.
In chapter 14 of the Writing Themselves In 4 report, LGBTIQA+ young people were asked what made them feel good and their answers indicated that days like IDAHOBIT have role to play. In the words of the young people (page 121 WTI4):
"Attending LGBTQIA+ events and having the opportunity to provide guidance and advice to younger queeros."
(Aged 20, WA)
"Seeing representation of people like me! And more diversity in media!"
(Aged 15, VIC)
"When I see or hear anything supportive of the community."
(Aged 16, VIC)
If your workplace missed the IDAHOBIT boat this year, bookmark this page for next year, where there are tips and resources for creating events that mark the day and for showing your support.
Today we are sharing with you a video message from Marina Carmina, Director of Rainbow Health Victoria, about the importance of safe and inclusive services for the LGBTIQA+ community.
