Val's Newsletter

Well it's the final day of June 2021 - where did the first half of 2021 go? Despite the lockdowns we've experienced, the Val's team and much of the aged care sector overall, have continued to adapt to this ever changing Covid environment. It's been a busy month and things don't look like slowing down any time soon. For everyone currently in lockdown or experiencing Covid-related restrictions, hang in there and stay safe.

Val's LGBTI Ageing & Aged Care

Events

MAV LGBTI positive ageing

On 29 June the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) hosted a forum developed by the Val's team, including inspiring elders, and local government representatives. The focus was to build knowledge and LGBTI-inclusive positive ageing action. There were nearly 80 participants from a range of Victorian LGAs. Thanks to all our presenters, and we look forward to seeing the development and growth of positive ageing initiatives for older LGBTI Victorians.

News & More

Coming Out....

Lovely story of Ken Felts, a 91 year old in the US who is attending his first Pride March after coming out at aged 89. In an earlier article here Ken said, “I’ve been in the closet all my life, deep in the closet. “Opening that door at the front, I had great trepidation as to what people would say. I was very concerned because I needed people and I couldn’t stand the thought of losing them just because I decided to finally be who I really was.”
You can read more about Ken's coming out here  including the positive responses he's experienced.

10 Best LGBTIQ+ Docs

There is a wonderful range of LGBTI+ documentaries on many streaming services, and during the recent Pride Month in the US, a list of 10 documentaries focusing on LGBT+ history was published here.  Many if not all are available on screening services in Australia so have a look on any platforms you have access to. These provide a great opportunity to build understanding and knowledge of LGBTI+ histories. In addition there are Australian titles on many of the streaming services too.
