ART247'S ART CENTER GROWS:

 

ANNOUNCES BRAND NEW ART CLASSES FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS;
ANNOUNCES TWO NEW INSTRUCTORS JOINING THE ARTS CENTER.

REGISTRATION NOW OPEN FOR CLASSES

    
ART247 (Formerly Market street Art Studios) located along the Historic Erie Canal in Lockport continues its growth as a Professional Art Gallery and Arts Education Center providing new professional Arts Education and Classes to Niagara and Erie Counties. Exciting new Art classes include Intro to Oil Pastel, Chinese Landscape Painting, Creating Comics, and a captivating new series in Chinese Yoga (Qigong) at the Gallery where students learn and practice Chinese Yoga surrounded by the Arts in the Gallery - and whether permitting, outside overlooking the Historic Canal. These classes join our current Resident Artist's classes teaching Oil Painting, Watercolors for Adults and Children, Puppeteering and Puppet Making, Mixed Media Arts, Pottery, and Music Instructions.

CLASS DETAILS:

 
ART247 | Classes | PERSPECTIVE DRAWING FOR ARCHITECTURE. This course breaks down the production process for understanding and constructing architectural scenes, both interior and exterior, via perspective drawing. Students will learn one point, two point, and three point perspective as applied to any architectural structure. Strong perspective drawing skills are important for most fields of art including interior design, animation, and Fine Art.
Classes run for six weeks on Wednesdays from February 8 to March 15, 10am - 11:30am.
▪ Registration fee is $165. Students must pay session fee prior to the first class's start date. Drop-in class participation is available space permitting, for $35 per class. Prior session registration and pay is strongly encouraged. Instructor Donald Jackson.
  
ART247 | Classes | PORTRAITURE DRAWING. This is a college level drawing class that will teach a variety of traditional methods for learning or improving portraiture skills. Students learn semi-blind contour drawing skills to utilize keen eye-hand coordination skills to create a portrait likeness of any model. Gesture drawing, subtractive drawing and a variety of rendering and blending skills are taught from which the student can develop their own style. Critique is an essential part of this course as it teaches students critical thinking skills that break through obstacles to artistic growth. 
Classes run for six weeks. Thursday classes run from February 9 to March 16, 10am-11:30am; Saturday classes run every other week from February 18 to May 27, 11:30am-1:00pm.
▪ Registration fee is $165 for either Thursday class session, or Saturday class session. Students must pay session fee prior to the first class's start date. Drop-in class participation is available, space permitting, for $35 per class. Prior session registration and pay is strongly encouraged. Instructor Donald Jackson.
 
ART247 | Classes | FIGURE MODELING. This is a college level course in nude figure drawing. Students of all levels can join. Drawing techniques taught will include blind and semi-blind contour drawing, gesture drawing, additive and subtractive drawing all based on Western traditions. Students will learn how to manipulate their drawings with light and shadow. Students will understand how to render human anatomy to create high quality works of fine art.
Classes run for six weeks on Thursdays from February 9 to March 16, 12pm - 1:30pm.
▪ Registration fee is $165. Students must pay session fee prior to the first class's start date. Drop-in class participation is available space permitting, for $35 per class. Prior session registration and pay is strongly encouraged.  This class is restricted to ages 18+, proof of age and waiver required for registration. Instructor Donald Jackson.
 
ART247 | Classes | CHINESE YOGA (QIGONG) AT THE GALLERY. Qigong (pronounced "Chee-Gung") is an ancient form of moving meditation widely practices in China and an integral part of Kung fu systems like Tai Chi. This class teaches students preliminary Zen meditation techniques, how to identify and activate the primary cycle of energy flow for health. Students will learn a classical form of Qigong from Shaolin Temple; Yi Jin Jing - Muscle Tendon Changing Yoga while surrounded by art in the Galleries of ART247. This form uses the body's natural abilities to keep the joints and internal organs healthy and energized. Each student may work to the best of their capacity, this is a low impact form of exercise. The instructor has learned many styles of Kung fu in both the USA and Asia since 1993. Students should wear loose-fitting comfortable clothing.
Classes run for eight  weeks. Friday classes run from February 10 to March 31, 10am-11:00am; Saturday classes run every other week from February 18 to May 27, 10am-11:00am.
▪ Registration fee is $80 for either Thursday class session, or Saturday class session. Students must pay session fee prior to the first class's start date. Drop-in class participation is available, space permitting, for $15 per class. Prior session registration and pay is strongly encouraged. Waiver required for registration. ART247 | Classes | CHINESE LANDSCAPE PAINTING. This class teaches students how to use traditional materials and methods to experience this 5,000 year old art form. This popular course utilizes natural themes to construct classical Chinese scroll paintings. The instructor studied in Asia for 5 Years and imbues the course with anecdotes of Eastern Philosophy to bring depth to the student's experience and appreciation of Chinese culture.
Classes run for six weeks on Fridays from February 10 to March 17, 11:15am - 12:45pm.
▪ Registration fee is $165. Students must pay session fee prior to the first class's start date. Drop-in class participation is available space permitting, for $35 per class. Prior session registration and pay is strongly encouraged. Instructor Donald Jackson.
 
 ART247 | Classes | CARTOONING FOR KIDS. This popular workshop teaches basic 2D cartooning skills teaching children ways to construct cartoon characters both from what they see and from imagination. Students will apply these skills to create a variety of objects and environments also. The workshop culminates in students creating a brief comic strip using these learned skills.
Classes run for eight weeks. These Saturday classes run every other week from February 18 to May 27, 1:15pm - 2:45pm.
▪ Registration fee is $160. Students must pay session fee prior to the first class's start date. Drop-in class participation is available space permitting, for $30 per class. Prior session registration and pay is strongly encouraged.  This class is for kids ages 8+. Instructor Donald Jackson.
 
ART247 | Classes | CREATING COMICS. Comics is one of America's unique art forms, along with jazz and musicals. Creators in comics from the 1930s to today are studied as guides for both student development and understanding a historic perspective of this art form. In this course you will learn basic methods of writing and drawing your own comics, comic strips or graphic novels. The course is based on professional standards and traditions in the comics industry. Students learn how narrative structure, character design, comic book style illustration, architectural drawing, concept design, story-boarding and inking. Students will also learn how to promote their work online and at comic book conventions.
Classes run for eight weeks. These Saturday classes run every other week from February 18 to May 27, 3:15pm - 4:45pm.
▪ Registration fee is $170. Students must pay session fee prior to the first class's start date. Drop-in class participation is available space permitting, for $35 per class. Prior session registration and pay is strongly encouraged.  This class is for kids ages 12+. Instructor Donald Jackson.
 
 
ART247 | Classes | INTRO TO OIL PASTEL WITH JESSIE. This is an introduction to oil pastel course. This may be a new medium for students and no previous experience with oil pastels is necessary. During this course students will learn how to use the medium, drawing techniques and how they apply using both pastels and pencil together. Students will use the medium as well as their creativity for a piece in the student show at the end of the course. Student & Teacher Art Show: Opening Reception May 27th, 1pm - 4pm. Exhibition May 27th - June 25th.
Classes run for eight weeks. Session A for Ages 8 - 12 runs every Sunday from February 19 to April 9, 11am - 12:30pm; Session B for Ages 13+ runs every Sunday from February 19 to April 9, 1:15pm - 2:45pm.
▪ Registration fee is $180 for Session A; $240 for session B. Students must pay session fee prior to the first class's start date. Drop-in class participation is available for both sessions space permitting, for $35 per class. Prior session registration and pay is strongly encouraged. Instructor Jessica Tomaino.
 
ART247 | Classes | BENDING THE BASICS DRAWING. Bending the Basics Drawing is a class that approaches the elements of art and principles of design in 3 exercises. Each class focuses on a couple elements and/or principles in a fun, hands-on way. No textbooks here. The classes will use a variety of mediums such as ink, pencil, charcoal, and pastels. This class has drop-in enrollment and is great for anyone with or without drawing experience to get practice and learn about their own drawing process.
Classes run every Thursday starting February 16, 4pm - 5pm
▪ Registration fee: $35 per class. Prior class registration and pay is strongly encouraged. Instructor Jessica Tomaino.
 
ART247 | Classes | STREET CHALK CAMP WITH JESSIE. ART247 along with instructor Jessica Tomaino, are excited to offer Street Chalk Camps throughout the warmer months in 2017. One weekend a month from May-September there will be a Street Chalk Camp teaching students how to prep a street piece and then apply it to pavement from start to finish. If you have been able to attend the Lockport Sweet Chalk Festival or others in the past and have witnessed the process you can give it a try yourself. It is a hands-on artistic experience that teaches organization and planning skills, use of chalk pastels as a medium and pavement as a canvas, and helps a student find their artistic style in a new and fun way.
Classes run one weekend a month from May - September, Friday 4pm - 5pm, Saturday 10am - 2pm, and Sunday 1pm - 4pm.

Culminating in a Student & Teacher Art Show: Opening Reception May 27th, 1pm - 4pm. Exhibition May 27th - June 25th.
Classes run for ten weeks. Session A for Older students runs Saturdays from January 28 to May 6, 10am - 11:00am; Session B runs every Saturdays from January 28 to May 6, 11:00am - 12:00pm.
▪ Registration fee is $150 for Session A or B. Students must pay session fee prior to the first class's start date. Instructor Sister Jeanette.
 
ART247 | Classes | ADULT WATERCOLOR CLASSES. This course helps students develop techniques and skills in watercolor painting.
Culminating in a Student & Teacher Art Show: Opening Reception May 27th, 1pm - 4pm. Exhibition May 27th - June 25th.
Classes run for ten weeks on Wednesdays from January 25 to April 12, 3pm - 4:30pm.

ART247 | Classes | CHILDREN'S WATERCOLOR, PASTELS, OILS. This course helps students develop techniques and skills in Watercolor, Pastels, Oils.
Classes run for six weeks on Saturdays from January 7 to February 11, 1pm - 3:00pm.
▪ Registration fee is $120. Students must pay session fee prior to the first class's start date. Drop-in class participation is available, space permitting, for $25 per class. Prior session registration and pay is strongly encouraged. For ages 8 to 18. Instructor Sally Reid & Rhonda Daigler.

JOINING THE ARTS CENTER AT ART247 ARE INSTRUCTORS DONALD JACKSON AND JESSICA TOMAINO:

 
Donald Jackson holds a degree in Fine Art, Art Education and Master's degree in Educational Technology from Buffalo State College. He has exhibited his work in New York City, Puerto Rico, Japan and Taiwan. He has been teaching and freelancing in the arts since 2003. He studied traditional Asian art in Taiwan and Japan for 5 years. Additionally, Donald has studied several systems of Chinese Kung fu, Qigong and Buddhist meditation at Shaolin Temple and other locations. ART247 is excited to have Donald teaching both Art instruction and Chinese Yoga (Qigong) at the Gallery.


 
Jessica Tomaino holds an associate’s degree in Fine Arts from Niagara County Community College, and has further training from Buffalo State for graphic design. Jessica additionally holds a bachelor’s degree in Tourism and Recreation Event Management from Niagara University. Owner of Wild at Heart Illustration, she specializes in oil pastel, oil paint, and ink pet portraits. In the past four years she has also been a featured artist in the Lockport Sweet Chalk Festival. ART247 is excited to have Jessica teaching Intro to Oil Pastel, Bending the Basics Drawing, and Intro to Street Chalk Art classes in 2017.
