The Summer Olympics Have Arrived!

Message From Cale

Summer is in full swing, and it's time for the Olympics again! It has been a hot summer here in Mid-Missouri so far, and I would imagine that August will give us more of the same. Micki and I have decided to brave the craziness and take the whole family down to Mexico for a family vacation. The twins did great on their first two plane rides and have been enjoying the balcony and the warm sea air! Alexis and Ellie have been relaxing and enjoying their time as well - I think they'd both move down here if grandma and grandpa would let them!

I was thinking about some of the things that people always say you should check on your home: change your smoke detector batteries with the time change, check your gutters to make sure that they are clean in spring and fall. What I think is really important is to not think of any home as zero-maintenance. As much as the building industry is going toward low-maintenance or ultra-low-maintenance products, none of them are zero-maintenance. If we think about our homes like we think about our cars, we would all be a little better off.

Since the Olympics only happen every four years (at least the Summer Olympics) it is a good time to look over some of those larger, more often forgotten about materials on your home. Have you checked your windows to see how well the seals are doing? You have to look at the seal between the pains of glass and the seal around the window sash - moving part of the window - as well. What about looking at your exterior doors and jambs? How are they holding up? Is your siding in good shape? Does it need a paint job? Even low-maintenance cement siding like Hardie will eventually need a new paint job. This is the first line of defense against the sun and weather.

Check your gutters, not just for leaves but look to see if there is a lot of dark stripes in a certain area or multiple areas. This could mean that the gutter is bent there and allowing the water to flow over the edge. It can also just mean that the gutters are dirty, so check that too! Is your roof in good shape? You don't have to wait for a hail storm to call out a professional and have them inspect your roof. Are you missing any shingles? Are there any signs of abuse from the weather?

All in all, it is just a good habit to get in to take notice of how your home is holding up so you can protect your investment. I hope you all have a great rest of your summer. Stay safe and have fun!
