Plaistow South Big Local Community E-News
Great to see free community libraries popping up!
It’s June already! Where has this year gone? As the lockdown begins to lift it has been wonderful to start seeing those we love.

We are celebrating Carers' Week with a week of lunch time mindfulness drop-in sessions - an opportunity for Carers to give yourselves some love.  There's plenty happening - hope you enjoy the read.

We would also like to wish all Dads a happy Father’s Day, which includes all those wonderful Step Dads and Father figures!

Sheba Choudhury, PSBL Director
A gift of peace in Carers Week – 7-13th June

Carers are often the last people to think about themselves and their needs.

PSBL is offering Carers a half hour every lunchtime (Monday 7th to Friday11th June) for some wonderful rest and rejuvenation

Just drop everything from 12.30-1.00 pm.  Dean and Aesha of Urban Mindfulness Foundation will guide Carers in a half hour of Mindfulness in a drop-in, friendly Zoom session.  Everyone is welcome of course.  Here is a direct link: www.bit.ly/zoom-mindful

Theme for the Networking Cuppa on 28th June is the Arts
Monday 28th June - 2.00 - 3.15
We are pleased to welcome Rosetta Arts as our guest speaker in June.  This is an opportunity to network and share ideas for using the arts for community benefit..  At our green spaces Cuppa last month, we had 18 people!

Help to increase the reach of community projects by finding out about each other!  Look forward to seeing you on 28th at 2pm. Do spread the word. Direct Zoom link is here

We are being interviewed on Revive FM 94.0!

ReviveFM is a community radio station based in the heart of Newham.  Sheba, our Director, will be in the studio and the hot spot alongside Denny on Monday 28th June.  Listen in at 1pm!

Do you know places or Projects that would like to use our free WIFI Router?
We need your ideas for places and projects that need WIFI.  We have a Router with unlimited data that we can loan out.  We can buy more!  The powerful router can be plugged in (or just use the battery) and can help give WIFI and data access in Plaistow South.

We want to help your volunteers, service users and passers-by to be able to access the internet.  Interested? Contact us!

Mini Libraries – take out a book!

Last year PSBL funded a local resident with an idea to develop front garden mini libraries. Due to restrictions it was put on hold. We are delighted to say that three streets have now signed up as well as a Community GardenWild Green E13 which also received PSBL funding for their work.

We are excited to see these projects happening and look forward to keeping you updated on what happens next.  The photos are a local workshop with all 4 libraries and the one already in situ in Sutton Court Road. Take along books you have enjoyed and take your next one to read.  Enjoy!

Saying goodbye to Phyllis
On Friday 14th May friends, relatives and groups came together to say goodbye to beloved resident & long serving PSBL steering group member - Phyllis Nelson. The commemorative event organised by Plaistow Community Neighbourhoods was part of Dying Matters Awareness week. The event featured performances, tributes, the planting of a tree & unveiling of a plaque.

It was a wonderful way to remember Phyllis and also loved ones lost during the pandemic. PSBL is hoping to work alongside Plaistow Community Neighbourhoods & others who are planning to develop the site into a Memorial Garden.
EU Citizens must register to stay in the UK by 30th June
It is important to know that people who are EU Citizens need to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) before the 30th June 2021 to secure their right to continue to live and work in the UK after Brexit.

Do not assume that you do not need to apply.  You need to apply (except in a few cases) if:
  • You were born in the UK but are not a British citizen
  • Have a UK ‘permanent residence document
  • Are a family member of an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen who does not need to apply – including if they’re from Ireland
  • Are an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen with a British citizen family member
Please note, if you have children, you still need to apply for them separately. Each child will need their own application
