Significant news from and for our diocesan family: you can read the complete article,  but here are the highlights: because of my father's declining health, I decided in mid-July that I could not both serve the remaining two months of my term as President of the diocesan Standing Committee and tend adequately to my family and Emmanuel responsibilities. I stepped down from that committee on July 26th. A much bigger change comes as Sue Spring, our beloved, veteran diocesan administrator, has announced her plans to retire on August 31, the same day as her husband. There will be a chance to honor and thank Sue for her faithful ministry at the Synod banquet on October 15th.

Our diocese has found a local layman who had a previous career in Episcopal diocesan administration and has agreed to step in as an interim until the new Bishop is in place -- and he happens to be married to me. Mark will be in Springfield two days a week beginning August 16th and work from home the remainder of the time. (The fact that I had already decided to resign before learning of Sue's retirement just shows how good God is at his job -- I could not ethically have participated in interviews, and upon Mark's call would have had to step down anyway, since the Standing Committee currently employs the diocesan staff and I had been supervising them since February 1st.) Please pray for Sue, for Mark, and for our diocese as we continue to move towards our Nominating and Electing Synods.
This Week's Highlights
In accordance with new CDC and local guidance, Emmanuel will again  require everyone to wear masks at our indoor group events, including Sunday Mass and all other liturgies, until further notice. Thank you for proactively loving your neighbors in Champaign County by masking up when you are in Emmanuel buildings!

After interviews with staff, reference calls, and auditions with the Emmanuel Choir, Mother Beth has called Nicholas Pothier as our new Choirmaster beginning in August. Nicholas brings 13 years of church music background, including service as music ministry director at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Hampstead, New Hampshire. He is currently a DMA student in Vocal Coaching and Accompanying at the University of Illinois. Please make him welcome.

Our August homily series continues week by week, based on the lectionary readings and our summer book by noted spiritual writer Henri Nouwen, With Burning Hearts. You will hear all three of our preachers discuss God's work in the Mass, and then we'll hold two discussions after our 9 a.m. Mass on August 15 and 22. There's still time to read this beautiful and direct devotional work before then!

Taking Faith Home

Parish Calendar

IN A PASTORAL EMERGENCY - If you or a family member are in the hospital or have another personal emergency, please let the clergy know; they are ready to visit or assist. If the office is closed, please leave the information (including which hospital) in one of their personal office voicemail boxes or on a home phone. Emmanuel can also arrange to have meals provided; just ask!
Emmanuel's ministry staff seek health for both themselves and the parish culture by taking regular time off. MOTHER BETH is off on Fridays. MARISA CROFTS is off on Mondays. DEACON CHRIS is in the office Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. Voice mail may be left in their boxes at any time.
The church office is open roughly 9-11 weekday mornings currently, as well as by appointment. At other times our staff will continue fulfilling all their ministry responsibilities from home, including actively responding to email and phone messages.
