Are you holding onto inherited family trauma?

Feeling blocked or fearful in life is a feeling that many of us are accustomed to having.   In fact, it has become so much the norm, that to feel differently can be perceived as a threat for ourselves and others around us.

While we don't always need a 'why' as to what we are feeling, it can help at times for us to recognize that what we are experiencing is not entirely in our control, and for some, has been an inherited family pattern that is needing to be heard and healed in order for us (and our ancestors) to be able to move forward.

So how can you tell if this is something that you've inherited vs. something that you have created completely on your own?

Inherited family trauma is often not only felt by one person in the family but rather by multiple people in a family (looking at siblings, parents, grandparents, cousins, children, etc).

One example of this:

When I was a child I was deathly afraid of fire.   In fact, I was so afraid that I planned escape routes like it was the norm, had blankets tied together in my closets for an 'easier escape' from my 2nd floor bedroom, and cut holes in the screens of the windows in order to ensure my safe escape.

In my early 20's I found out a cousin had been deathly afraid of fire as well.  She went to the extremes as I did, to the point that she spent a summer creating a wire 'ladder' outside of her bedroom window so that she could escape should fire happen.

It wasn't until my 30s that I found out that my grandfather's grandmother had been lighting a fire back in 1878(ish) and using an oil can to help the fire get started, the flame caught to the oil can, and she herself was burnt alive.   She left behind 3 children; her older 2 boys, and my grandfather's mother who was 18 months old at the time.

This was not something that I had been aware of for a greater part of my life, and yet, the fear of dying in a fire was so incredibly real for me.   This is an inherited family trauma.

Sometimes it's not so easy to see.

Feelings of not being good enough, being abandoned, feeling left out, not feeling heard, not being able to receive are typically mimicked by a broken bond with one (or both of our parents).   These subtle breaks in the bond with our parents can have lasting effects into our adulthood, as we try to seek out a completion of ourselves through other means, quite often resulting in us going back to the old patterns of behavior.

It's not a blame game, but rather, an understanding that our parents did the best job that they knew how to do, and often are dealing with their own inherited family trauma, and the emotions that come along with that.

The more we begin to see that our fears, our limitations and even our blockages to the world around us can be influenced by these inherited family patterns, and allow ourselves to bring voice to the hurts that have been experienced by ourselves and our ancestors, the more healing that we are able to bring forward, for ourselves, our children, and the world.

Book a session with a practitioner today if you feel if you are holding onto inherited family trauma.   It's never too late to start to bring healing forward.
