School Value for Term 1
Whakaute/Respect
Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Last week we saw the safe return of all our year 7/8 students, from their biannual camp to Finlay Park on Lake Karapiro. From all accounts, everyone had a great time with lots of stories to share. These camps are an integral part of our curriculum and require much planning and preparation. My sincere thanks to the Ngauruhoe teachers for all their great organisation and to all the parents who supported the students and teachers. Without your help, these camps would not be able to take place. Thank you.

Congratulations to all our swimmers who took part in the Tongariro and Ngauruhoe swimming sports. These are always fun-filled competitive days and my thanks once again to all the teachers and parents who officiated on the respective days. We wish all our swimmers going onto the Kaipara competition all the very best.

Thank you to Nigel Perkins and the PTA for organising our annual golf day. This event has become a highlight on our school fundraising calendar and was very well supported by parents and local businesses. Thank you to all our sponsors for the auction items; the funds raised will be going towards our sports complex the BOT is wanting to develop later on in the year. Well done PTA.

We have over the past few weekends been the target of vandalism. Last weekend a banister outside Room 20 was kicked over and a hole kicked in a wall. Damage to the palings and banisters appears to be a regular occurrence and we ask that if you see anything or know of any such incident, can you please report it to the office.

Please be reminded that the free Family Zone licensing is available to all parents. To register and gain insights into your child's computer use, please go to our Website - Information - and click on the button Cyberhub. More detailed information will be sent out on a separate email.

Covid-19 update

Our school staff and leadership remain prepared for the possibility there might be a case in our community. If that were to occur we are confident we can put our plans in place and know we will be supported by regional health authorities and the Ministry of Education.

I am sure you are all keen to do what you can to prevent risk of infection. The best preventative steps are:

  • wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and dry thoroughly
  • avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
  • avoid sharing anything that has come in contact with saliva, whether in your living or social environments
  • stay home when you are sick and seek medical attention
  • cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the rubbish
  • get adequate sleep and eat well-balanced meals to ensure a healthy immune system.

Our school values continue to play an important part in all our activities.  A reminder they are Respect, Responsibility and Integrity. It is so important we continue to care for and support all members of our wonderful school community, especially those who may be impacted by COVID-19 in some way.

If you want to know more about COVID-19 please make sure that any reading you are doing is from a reliable source. The Ministry of Health is the best source of information for New Zealand and they update this information regularly - https://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/diseases-and-conditions/covid-19-novel-coronavirus

A reminder that anyone who is ill should not be attending school.

If families or members of the family are traveling overseas could you please be so kind as to notify the office on your return, and provide them with assurances that all necessary precautions have been taken to ensure the safety of our kids.

The COVID-19 symptoms are a fever, coughing and difficulty breathing. If anyone has these symptoms and has recently been to a country or area of concern, or have been in close contact with someone confirmed with COVID-19, please encourage them to contact Healthline (for free) on 0800 358 5453 (or +64 9 358 5453 for international SIMs) or their doctor immediately.

Kind regards,

Gary Pasfield

School Life

Vandalism
The school has been vandalised a number of times recently, with railings smashed.  If you know anything about these incidents please let us know.

Nits
Headlice have been making an appearance lately.  Please check your children regularly and if you find nits or lice please treat them right away.  Here are a couple of links to good websites if you want to read more:

https://www.health.govt.nz/your-health/conditions-and-treatments/diseases-and-illnesses/head-lice
https://dermnetnz.org/topics/head-lice/

School Gates
If you open a gate to come into school please make sure you close it behind you.

Medicine at School
If your child needs medicine at school either as a one off (e.g. antibiotics for illness) or every now and then (e.g. inhaler for asthma) you need to fill out a medicine authority form.  All medicine is kept securely in the sickbay, so students must not have inhalers, Panadol or any other medicine in their schoolbags or classrooms.

Road Patrol
Our Road Patrol crew do a wonderful job of keeping everyone safe in the mornings.  Drivers - please be aware that you must stop at the pedestrian crossing, behind the white line, just as you would if there was no road patrol there.

Smart Watches
Smart watches and cellphones are not needed or allowed at school.
Ngauruhoe Camp
The Ngauruhoe Team arrived back from their week long camp at Finlay Park on Friday tired but happy! The camp was an amazing experience for our students - thank you to all our fabulous teachers and parent helpers!
Swimming Sports
Ngauruhoe and Tongariro Team Swimming Sports were great successes again this year with lots of fun and some tough competition.  It's always fantastic to see our students cheering each other on.  Good luck to all who are competing at Kaipara on 16 March.

Congratulations to our winners:

Y7/8 Caitlin Isherwood, Lily Bulman, Neve Twiname, Hazel Hall, Marley Kerlin, Jake Thorpe, Amalia Kesha, Luka Kirk, Maya Duckworth, Samuel Francis, Joseph Tautu Buchanan.
Thank you to Nigel Perkins and the PTA for organising our annual golf day!
Here is a game you may not be familiar with!

Did you know?
Delia in the office has to ring every unaccounted for student absence twice a day!

Please help Delia have more time by;

- letting the office know about any forthcoming absence, as well as your child's class teacher

- contacting the office if your child is sick for the day or will be late to school

- letting us know the reason for the absence (it is a legal requirement that we report on this to the MOE, we're not just being nosey!)

Just do one of the following to report an absence
1. Call the absence answerphone (09 411 8222, option 1)
2. Email to office@waimauku.school.nz
3. Pop into reception
4. Fill in the absence form on the front page of the school website.

Letting us know what is happening really helps us to keep your children safe.

PTA UPDATE
Congratulations to our newly elected 2020 PTA
Chairperson - Bronwyn Wilson-Vogler
Treasurer - Sam Perkins
Secretary - Ashley Kerlin
Media Liaison - Jasmin Nicholson
Sponsorship Liaison - Jo Mellor

Thank you to those who attended the PTA AGM last Monday.  Welcome to our new members Melanie Potter, Ian Blackwell, Donna Swain, Sheree Helleur, Ange Searle and Kirsty Anthony and congratulations to Bronwyn, Sam, Ashley, Jasmin and Jo on taking up officer positions again this year.  Last week we held our Annual Golf Day at Muriwai Golf Club which was an outstanding success.  A huge thank you to the Golf Club for supporting the PTA and also to all the auction sponsors and those who donated products and services for the day.  Congratulations to the team 'Pork Chops', consisting of Chris Rickards, Ian Blackwell, Hayden Baddock and Tolan Henderson on winning the tournament and congrats to all who won auctions on the night - please don't forget to make your payments to the PTA for these items.

On 29 March the PTA are supporting the Waimauku Lions at their gala with a table selling our school-branded water bottles.  We are going to do a "two for one" deal, offering a mystery bottle with each water bottle sold.  The PTA kindly request that if you have "mystery bottles' at home, could you please donate them next week.  We're thinking along the lines of shampoo bottles, bottles of oil, tomato sauce, juice etc (preferably not alcohol as it may be children buying the water bottles).  Please bring your donations to the office window outside Room 1 any morning next week, and come along to support the gala on the 29th!

The PTA will be holding a Hot Dog Day on the 3rd of April.  Hot dogs will be on sale via Kindo from the 23rd of March.

RODNEY BASKETBALL

Pick Up League (ages 14-99)
This is a social night where we will meet at Matua Ngaru Primary School to play some social basketball games. No teams are set for week to week, we just turn up and organise teams based off numbers. This has been full all season so if you would like to be apart of the next season you will need to get onto the Facebook group ASAP!  Link to join and find more information: https://www.facebook.com/groups/PickUpLeague/

Quick 3 League (ages 14-99)
This is a night of competition and social Basketball played at Matua Ngaru Primary School. You can register as an individual to be put into a team or as a team ready to go. The idea of  quick 3 is a 3v3 Basketball game on a full court. This allows for more touches, more minutes and more development. After you play 3v3 full court your 5v5 full court game is noticeably improved.
There will be an A and a B grade (providing we get the numbers) which will be set up as A grade (competitive) B grade (social)
To register as an individual: www.rodneybasetball.co.nz/register
To register as a team:  www.rodneybasetball.co.nz/register

HoopNation Trials (U16&U18)
We are heading down to Tauranga for HoopNation over Labour Weekend and we are looking for competitive, local talent to join us! The trial will be held at Kaipara College on 29th March from 9am - 11am. This will hopefully be a one and done trial so please do not miss it. $3 donation on the day to trial.

Rodney Basketball Club Registration (U10, U12, U14, U15, U17)
We are currently sorting out how our Term Two structure will look, whether we continue to play in tournaments such as our Kingsway Quick 3 or if we have enough interest (register kids) in an age group to run our own.
If you are a current player, returning player or brand new player please register with the link below. I cannot confirm which day our games will be on as of yet due to the uncertainty of our numbers for each age group but if we are playing in our current competition it will most likely be a Saturday game (U10 - 11am, U12 - 12pm, U14 - 1pm, U15 - TBC, U17 - TBC)

FOR U15/U17 IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU PUT YOUR COLLEGE BASKETBALL BEFORE CLUB OR SOCIAL BASKETBALL!

Registration details: https://www.rodneybasketball.co.nz/register
