In these final days before Election Day, we feel compelled to give you the facts about Dough Smith. His campaign has really left us with no choice. After multiple negative attack ads against Jacqui arrived in mailboxes in recent weeks --- it’s critical that you have the facts about Doug’s voting record on increasing your taxes and his true position of support on All Aboard Florida’s rail project.
Doug Increased Taxes
Doug claims he hates taxes, but his voting record proves exactly the opposite. Doug voted to RAISE your millage rate 8 of the last 13 times he approved the County’s budget. Since Doug became a commissioner, your taxes have increased and the County’s budget has ballooned from about $96.5 million to over $153.4 million – a nearly 60% increase!
Doug’s PAC’s attacked Jacqui on this issue, but according to information provided by Martin County in an email on 08/24/16, Doug raised your taxes over and over again – in 2003, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014.
What do we have to show for Doug’s fiscal leadership while he raised your taxes? A $264 million backlog in crumbling roads and other infrastructure and county employees who have barely had a cost of living increase in nearly a decade.
To make matters worse, he voted against the FPL franchise fee which, was desperately needed to dig our county out of the hole that he helped put us in, but then after the franchise fee was in place, he wanted to raid the fund for other uses.
Doug has been a long-time supporter of high speed rail through Martin County
According to this TCPalm article, Doug’s efforts to bring passenger rail service through the Treasure Coast “began 12 years ago, advocating for service on Florida East Coast Railway's Miami-to-Jacksonville tracks.”
Here are other comments from Doug:
“Building a second track along the FEC route would make passenger service here feasible and realistic.”
"From my perspective, it's beneficial for Martin County to have passenger service."
“Martin County Commissioner Doug Smith … staked out a position that seems to put him out on a limb. And he's making no effort to back away from it in the face of overwhelming opposition from community members and fellow politicians. Supporting All Aboard Florida isn't a popular political position” and “along the Treasure Coast, elected officials in Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River counties appear nearly unanimous in their opposition to the proposed high-speed passenger service from Miami to Orlando.”
“No local government officials (except for Doug Smith) have spoken publicly in favor of the project.”
Then, when public opposition continued to build, Doug flip flopped. He claims he now opposes All Aboard. But can a leopard really change its spots? You decide.
Doug is a career politician whose words don’t match his actions. Doug just doesn’t get it.
On a positive note, the tremendous outpouring support that Jacqui has received has been energizing and encouraging to all of us who have been helping to get Jacqui elected. This has been an incredible journey and we look forward to a brighter future with Jacqui as our County Commissioner.
Election Day is Aug 30. Early voting ends Saturday, Aug 27 at 5:00 p.m.
