One candidate drops out,
another “pseudo-candidate” becomes a “write-in”
Dear Friends,

I wanted to make sure you knew about two important changes in my race to unseat the incumbent Martin County Commissioner in District 1.  One of the candidates (Henry Copeland) dropped out of the race last week.  Another interesting twist is that someone submitted their name as a write-in candidate.  Write-in candidates don't have to get petitions signed or pay the qualification fee. They typically don’t raise money, or campaign, or have any chance of winning.  Their name doesn’t even appear on the ballot.  You have to “write it in.”   But what a write-in candidate does is “close-out” a primary election. That means that only registered Republican voters will be able to vote for me for Martin County Commission District 1 on August 30 (or through vote-by-mail or early voting.)
The race is now down to two candidates -- and Republican voters have a clear choice, Jacqui Thurlow-Lippisch or Doug Smith.
Do you want a divisive, professional politician representing you? Or a people-centered, public servant?
The incumbent is a professional politician. He has been in office for 16 years. That’s a long time. The decisions of politicians are driven by their next election cycle and the special interests they serve. The incumbent is unable to build consensus or collaborate with his fellow commissioners.  He is out of touch with the majority of his constituents.
I am a Public Servant. With more than eight years of unpaid government experience as a Town of Sewall’s Point Commissioner and appointments to numerous regional and statewide government committees, I have always put the interests of those I serve above my own.
I am concerned about our long-term future and will cast every vote as a County Commissioner with integrity, honesty and transparency.
I am an independent thinker who is willing to listen to all sides and form my own opinion.  No special interests or political group or "kingmakers" control me.  You may not always agree with my positions, but you will always know where I stand. I am my own person.
These are my priorities:
  • As a proven River Advocate and voice for positive change to a broken system, I will continue the fight for the health of the St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon. The right political leadership must be in place to find permanent and swift solutions to this man-made travesty.
  • Fighting to protect residents from All Aboard Florida.
  • Creating a more fiscally responsible government.
  • Supporting local businesses and community revitalization efforts.
  • Properly funding, maintaining and improving infrastructure.
  • Bringing greater respect and civility to the county commission.
  • Building bridges between municipalities and the County.

Election Day is not when the winner of this race will be decided.  It's decided when registered Republicans cast their vote-by-mail and return their ballots to the Supervisor of Elections office.  Those of you who vote by mail will be receiving your ballots at the end of July.
Those who vote by mail will begin receiving their ballots at the end of July. Early voting is August 20 - 27th.  Election Day is Aug 30.

Together we can bring a new, more positive energy to the County Commission and solve our community's problems - together.

Best regards,

Jacqui Thurlow-Lippisch
