"For every good reason there is to lie, there is a better reason to tell the truth."
- Bo Bennett
Hi Friends,

You may have received something about me in the mail yesterday – an attack postcard from a Political Action Committee (PAC) called Citizens for Public Safety.  This PAC is the statewide political arm of the local firefighter’s union.  It’s the second postcard they’ve sent out for 16-year County Commissioner, Doug Smith.

I wish I could say I’m shocked that Doug Smith and his special interest group would stoop to this level, but in truth, this came as no surprise. It was my hope our campaigns could remain positive on both sides, but now that is impossible.

I find the tactics of Doug Smith and his Firefighter Union PAC repulsive.
They should be embarrassed. Where I come from, real men do their business face to face.
They don’t hide behind PACs and misleading postcards.

Mailings like this cost about $10,000 each, so clearly this PAC has a lot of money to throw around.  Obviously the mailer is filled with half-truths and innuendo and it’s our hope that voters will see the postcard for what it is – a desperate attempt by a professional politician and his backers who want to “win at all costs.”

The Martin County Firefighters' union not only sent out this attack mailer, but they also use their headquarters to store and construct Doug Smith’s political signs.  They wave for him on roadsides and hold Meet and Greets to raise money for him.

Let me be very clear.  I have the utmost respect for firefighters and appreciate the value of their services. Back in 2001, Bennet Richardson of Station 18 saved my life when I fell and broke my neck!  Sadly, according to this TCPalm article, his brother, Bryan Richardson, is Chairman of the PAC that mailed the attack ad.  To witness these campaign tactics perpetrated by the firefighters' union is very disappointing.

Getting the Facts Straight

The attack mailer sent out by Doug’s PAC implies that I have not been fiscally responsible to the Town of Sewall’s Point’s taxpayers because over the years I have had no option but to raise the millage rate.

Here’s what the misleading postcard fails to explain:
  • In 2011, when I was mayor, we actually DECREASED the millage rate.
  • In years 2012 - 2015, there was unanimous agreement by all five Town of Sewall’s Point Commissioners to raise the millage rate as a direct result of the Martin County Commission’s poor budgeting decisions.
  • Going back even earlier than that, the Martin County Commission created a situation where our town’s cost for fire rescue was going to increase TENFOLD -- from $150,000 to $1.5 million dollars. With a town budget of less than $3 million, Sewall’s Point had no choice but to go with the City of Stuart to limit that expense.
  • This year, the Martin County Commission's fire rescue consolidation proposal would have tripled the town costs! Again, Sewall’s Point residents were furious.
  • Obviously, no one likes to raise taxes. Such increases are an excruciating process and are thoroughly vetted by the public. Ironically, one of the primary reasons the Town of Sewall’s Point has had to raise millage rates over the years is because of the rising expenses of fire rescue services!

I am a Dedicated Public Servant. I’m running for Martin County Commission, District 1 to serve our entire community.

I have lived almost my entire life in this town. I love Martin County.  My intent is not only to maintain what makes us special and different, but also improve our quality of life.   Like you, I have high expectations of how our County Commissioners should represent us – and how they should behave.

Here are some questions for you to consider:
  • What are YOUR standards for those who hold local elected office?
  • Do you want a divisive, professional politician representing you? One who is willing to sling mud just to win his re-election? Or do you want a people-centered, public servant with integrity?
With more than eight years of unpaid government experience as a Town of Sewall’s Point Commissioner and appointments to numerous regional and statewide government committees, I have always put the interests of those I serve above my own.  While I make every attempt to get along well with others you can rest assured that no special interest groups or Political Action Committees will ever control me – like they do the incumbent. I stand on my own two feet and think for myself. As County Commissioner, I will always be honest and transparent with you -- the people I serve.

NOW I NEED YOUR HELP

That attack mailer went out to more than 10,000 Republican “Supervoters”- people who are likely to vote in the primary – just a few weeks before election day - so there’s no time to mail out a rebuttal. Please forward this email and share the information with as many of your voter friends and family as possible. Voters need to know the truth about who I am so they can make an informed decision on Election day.

With your help, we can bring a new, more positive energy to the County Commission and solve our community's problems together.  Please vote for me when early voting begins on Aug 20 – 27 or on Election Day on Aug 30.

Thank you so much for your steadfast support,

Jacqui Thurlow-Lippisch
