From the Executive Director's Desk

Those of us who attended the annual membership meeting last week were lucky to receive an update from Mike Williams, Vice President of BlueGreen Alliance, reporting live from the COP21 climate talks in Paris via Skype. Williams indicated that expectations were still high for a comprehensive agreement on climate change after the completion of the first week of negotiations.

Williams also told attendees that a key element of the agreement for the BlueGreen Alliance is including language on just transition, not only in the preamble, but in the operative part of the agreement. The BlueGreen Alliance previously sent a letter to address the inclusion of just transition, which is posted here.  Also available online is the BlueGreen Alliance's full statement of principles for COP21

The details of any agreement should be known in the next few days. For now, we'll share Mike's cautious optimism.

WEC Annual Membership Meeting
Les Leopold, executive director and President
of The Labor Institute,
gave an inspirational, yet sobering presentation about the key messages from his new book Runaway Inequality: An Activists Guide to Economic Justice. Leopold told WEC members that, "economic inequality will not cure itself."
Leopold was critical of the ability for existing non-profits and coalitions to address the issues and suggested that a massive, popular movement is needed to counter runaway inequality. Discounted copies of the book may be purchased in bulk for members of unions or other community and environmental groups. Click here for information about the book.
