YOUR SUPPORT IS GETTING POSITIVE RESULTS!
The story for the month of September 2018 is certainly one of disaster, with Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria causing death and destruction across the Eastern Caribbean, and along the Southeast and Gulf Coasts of the United States. Fortunately, our donors and sponsors came forward to help us put together a substantial shipment of relief supplies for the benefit of the Caribbean islanders on Dominica, over which the eye of Category 5 Hurricane Maria passed. The devastation of the island is so severe from the 200 mph wind gusts, and the need for relief supplies is now so great, that the supplies we shipped are providing much needed relief to the people we have served.
Macario Advantage’s shipment included food, clothes, shoes, toiletries, towels, school supplies and Bibles. We are so thankful that Dominica’s port and Customs officials worked with us to make the importation of our supplies relatively quick and easy.
REBUILDING LAMB's FEAST
Like almost all of the buildings in Dominica, the Lambs Feast kitchen lost its entire roof during
Hurricane Maria. Up to then, Lambs Feast had been preparing hot meals for home-bound elderly in Portsmouth, Dominica. To make the situation for the elderly even worse, some of the homes of these home-bound elderly were entirely destroyed by the hurricane right down to the ground, leaving them without any shelter of their own.
Last year, Macario Advantage repaired Lambs Feast’s foundation, replaced the floor, and painted the entire outside and inside of the building. The roof is currently being replaced, and then the wiring will be replaced so that the food service, as soon as it can be restored, will be better than ever.
The oven and refrigerator in the kitchen were damaged beyond repair by the storm. The program is severely handicapped until new appliances can be purchased. Please give what you can to help purchase these items.
Lamb’s Feast has prepared and distributed hot meals to home-bound elderly throughout the community for the past 15 years. The recipients of the meals are either in such poor health that they cannot leave their house, or they are caring for one or more family members that need constant attention due to physical or mental deficiencies.
ASSESSING OPPORTUNITIES FOR VOLUNTEERS
Macario Advantage is in the process of visiting schools, churches, and local charitable organizations to assess opportunities for volunteers to help with the hurricane recovery effort. Clearly, construction trades, especially carpenters, are in high demand. The shipment and delivery of construction materials like 2x4’s, galvanized roofing sheets, nails, plywood and the like are much needed items. Some of our fellow boaters are bringing in items that they can fit on their boats, and then staying on in Dominica to volunteer their time and labor to aid their selected organizations.
Our assessment process is also looking at accommodations and restaurants suitable for foreign volunteers, since these establishments were also heavily damaged and, in many cases, put out of business.
THE RECOVERY PROCESS WILL BE ONGOING..
We look forward to a productive season repairing facilities that are needed now more than ever to assist the locals in this time of urgent need. Please pray for us in these endeavors.
