Addressing Poverty In Paradise
June 2019  Vol 4, Issue 2 Newsletter

The 4H Club at the Salybia Primary School in the Kalinago Territory (native American land reservation) on the island of Dominica, West Indies, has been very active in preparing and planting a vegetable garden adjacent to the school. The vegetables grown in this garden will be used in the school kitchen to add nutrition to the lunches which are served daily. Macario Advantage supported the 4H Club by purchasing treated lumber and providing the labor to build a dozen raised beds. These beds make efficient use of space and keep maintenance to a minimum. Hand tools were also provided so that as many of the students as possible can work in the various vegetable beds at the same time.

The Clifton Primary School, which serves some small communities on the north end of the island of Dominica, was very badly damaged by Hurricane Maria in September, 2017. Most of the school’s buildings have now been restored.  A large stock of basic school supplies for both the teachers and the students are still needed. Macario Advantage teamed up with RiDom, a family organization with roots in Dominica, to restore desks and benches for the classrooms.

Macario Advantage also hired a local artist, Gabriel Dunstan, to paint a mural on the exterior of the main building.

Cornerstone House is a shelter for homeless men and women from areas around Castries, the capital city for the island of St. Lucia, West Indies. Macario Advantage cleaned, organized and repainted the kitchen, pantry and linen storage areas of the home.

We worked with the home’s manager to get the government to restore a large garden area that had been neglected, which can now provide fresh produce to supplement the normal meals that consist mostly of bread and noodles.

A campaign by Macario Advantage is being started in the U.S. to raise funds (US$950 each) to purchase two commercial-quality clothes washing machines. Donate Here.

The Boys Training Centre in Gros Islet, a town on the north end of the island of St. Lucia, West Indies, is a shelter for boys aged 10-18 that have been removed from their homes by the courts. The kitchen, which prepares all meals for the boys and staff, was badly over-crowded, making it very inefficient for the kitchen staff to work. Macario Advantage hired a local contractor to knock out a portion of one wall and add a new double-door into an adjacent room which now serves as the food storage area. The refrigerator and freezer were moved out of the kitchen into this room, and a large bin was built to store heavy bags of rice, sugar and flour.

We also worked with Sherwin Williams to supply paint for re-painting the kitchen, storage room, and dining room. Volunteers will be recruited in early 2020 to do the painting. Volunteer Here.

Macario Advantage is seeking donors’ support to raise funds to purchase commercial-quality, 220v appliances for several organizations operating poverty relief programs in the eastern Caribbean islands. Our target is $25,000 to assist in purchasing the following:
  • Clothes washing machines (2)
  • Commercial Grade Propane 6-burner Cook Stove (1)
  • Kitchen Refrigerators (2)
  • 11 Cubic Feet Chest Freezer (2)
