Prescribed/Controlled Burn
Thursday, February 25th, 2021

If you saw our last newsletter, you may remember that we had a prescribed burn tentatively scheduled for the week of January 19th, 2021. As can happen, the weather conditions did not hold and we weren't able to move forward with the burn. Based on the nice sunny weather forecast for the next few days, we're trying again for this Thursday. And like last time, the NC Forestery Service may come out and still decide that the conditions aren't quite right.

It is important to note, that Carolina Memorial Sanctuary will be closed this Thursday 2.25.21, if we proceed with the burn. No one will be allowed to enter.

We will make updates about the burn status on our Facebook page. You can also call us at (828) 782-7283, if you don't use Facebook and would like to know if it's safe to visit.

What To Know

If you are new to the concept of a controlled or prescribed burn, it may sounds counterintuitive... why would anyone intentionally set fire to their land? What about the plants and animals? As strange as it sounds, it's actually incredibly beneficial for both plants and animals. Although the land won’t be as “pretty” immediately after the burn, plant life will reemerge and the beauty of the land will return. Learn more about controlled burns here.

We still have a lot of work to do wrangling exotic and invasive species and establishing native habitats. Prescribed burns will continue to be an ongoing part of our invasive management. Every winter we'll focus on a specific section of the Sanctuary and then the next winter, we'll switch to a different section. Combined with seasonal mowing and occasional targeted herbicide applications (approved for land conservation), the burn will help us to keep the meadow as a meadow, and encourage the wildlife that call our meadow a home to flourish and thrive. Since these management techniques require trained specialists and careful planning, we remind all of our guests and visitors to leave the overall management of the property in the hands of Carolina Memorial Sanctuary staff and our contracted helpers.
