... until the first day of school!

Message from the President

I hope your family is enjoying the remainder of summer break - in whatever form that comes in - rest/relaxation or time to do lots of activities. I suppose I'm one of the rare folks, but I prefer the school year routine. Though summer break is a good time for a change and allows us all to recharge.

We have accomplished so much this past year, there is so much to be proud of. I have especially enjoyed getting to know really great people that make up our Edison community.

I've been working on planning out next year's calendar and it'll be full of fun, family activities. But I need your help!  Whatever your skills, whatever your availability, I need you!

PTO will ask for volunteers in the fall, but I want to extend an invitation to you now...if you're thinking about how you can help but you're just not sure how you best fit in, please contact me. Let's talk or email so I can understand what your interests are and together we'll find a good fit that is comfortable for you.

PTO Meetings to Become
Less Business and More Social

Meetings... few of us enjoy them.
Social time... what parent has time for that?

We understand your time is precious, and after a long day, the last thing you want to sit through is a meeting. But wouldn't it be nice to have the opportunity to meet other parents and have some fun with your student(s) at the same time?

If you answered a resounding, "YES!", then take note as PTO is looking to mix a bit of business with fun for our monthly "meeting" as we move into the 2016-17 year.

The goal in changing our format to a Meeting/Social is to get the business of the PTO completed quickly and efficiently in a casual and fun environment, while enabling social time for students, parents, grandparents, Edison staff, and volunteers. Please join us - come to get to know the members of your Edison community. No sitter? No problem! The kids are also welcome since we are planning activities for the social portion that include them too!

The PTO Meetings/Socials will continue to be held the second Wednesday of each month, and our first Meeting/Social event will be on September 14th at 6:30pm. We are calling it Sprinkles and Sprinklers. This will be an ice cream social for the whole family, so siblings are welcome. This is a FREE event and will be held on the Edison playground. Ice cream, sprinkles, and popsicles will be provided by PTO.

The October meeting will be held at Busy Bees Art Studio in Mentor where you can make a craft alongside your student. There are many items to choose from that you can paint. Families will pay for the items of their choice. Food and drinks will be provided by PTO.

Future meetings will include things such as a night at Chuck E Cheese, Edison Spirit week crafts, Family Fitness night, Reading night (come in your PJs!), and a Lawn Yahtzee craft night. For details each month's meeting/social - check the PTO Calendar.

This new format is being organized by our Engagement Committee - chaired by Wendy Fiebig. Wendy would love to hear your thoughts and ideas (or even get a few volunteers to help on her committee). You can contact her at 330-842-7076 or wallerfiebig@aol.com.

Fundraising Update
Our goal for the 2015-16 year was to raise $30,000.
We surpassed our goal by $2,000, and raised $32,000!

This goal is consistent with what we've been raising in past years too. It pays for $10,000 of playground improvement and the remaining $20,000 is for student activities & recognition.

By the way - not only did we pass our fundraising goal, but because we raised more money and reduced costs in other budget categories,
we were under budget by $9,300 overall for the PTO fiscal year (which ended June 30th).

For a further breakdown on where all that money is going visit the Fundraising link on the PTO's Webpage

Pastries with Parents

Hope you were able to join us back in April at Edison for breakfast with your student before their school day.  It means so much to the children to be able to share their school and their experiences with you.  Save the date, we are planning for Sept 20 - 21 to do this again!

Spirit Wear

Newly designed shirts as voted on by the incoming 5th grade class will soon be available for purchase!
There are also still a limited selection of previous items available.
Options are shown on the Spirit Wear portion of the PTO website

What a roaring success!
This event raised $9,700.

Thank you to our committee members! Their dedication to creating this event and transforming the night into a truly wonderful event for our community.

The auction baskets were highly sought after, the food was a lot of fun, and of course there were the purses!

Plans for next year are underway.

Carnival
The traditional Edison Carnival was held at the end of April, and it was back better than ever!  All the games were rebuilt and the students really enjoyed these new games. We invited the Ridge Acres community and the School of Innovation. Our games were staffed by parents and 23 high school volunteers.

We hope to continue this strong Edison tradition...but we need you! Many of our games had to be closed for periods of time because we didn't have enough people to help. Older siblings or adults can run these games, so please consider helping next year, even if you split a shift with somebody else!

Campbell's Labels for Education

In the month of April, we collected Campbell's Labels for Education.
The winning classrooms were:
Kindergarten...Miss Makar with 76 points
1st grade...Mrs. Cardile with 176 points
4th grade...Mrs. Bittner with 181 points
5th grade...Ms. Amata with 105 points
(No labels were turned in to any of the 2nd or 3rd grade classes.)
So far we've purchased new art supplies. We'll be getting some new playground toys with these labels too.  Thanks for participating to make our great school even better!

Marco's Pizza

We've heard such positive feedback from students, families, and teachers, that we'll be doing box nights again for the 2016-17 school year, but with a twist!  We will be incorporating them into the learnings for Red Ribbon Week and Drop Everything and Read Week!

We'll also continue to do our monthly Marco's night, but will be switching to the Third Wednesday.  Reminders will still be sent out for each pizza night.

Popcorn Days

Thank you to our volunteers for making 2,000 of bags of popcorn during the 2015-16 school year. It was greatly enjoyed by students and staff!

Teacher Appreciation Week 2016

We celebrated a wonderful Teacher Appreciation Week at the end of the 2015-2016 school year.
