LET'S HAVE A NATURAL BALL. Marcia Ball is back in town tomorrow night at SPACE in Evanston. If you waited this long to decide, you won't be sitting, but you can be dancin' your youknowwhatoff in the standing room only section.

$%#@!&. In my haste last week, I lost my mind for a minute and got the name wrong for Breezy Rodio's new CD.  His new Delmark CD, which came out Oct. 19, is called If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix it. The recording has 16 songs (nine originals) and features guest appearances by Monster Mike Welch, Kid Andersen, Corey Dennison and Quique Gomez. For those unfamiliar with Breezy, he honed his guitar skills with a nine-year stint in Linsey Alexander's band. His previous CD, Sometimes the Blues Got Me, came out in February 2018.

NOT ANOTHER ONE. Both locations of The Rock House (Glenview and Wilmette), which had occasional blues, have closed. The good news? The Twelve Tone Music School is still open. LEARN MORE

NOW THAT'S CAUSE FOR A CELEBRATION. Mozell Barnes, who happens to own The East of the Ryan (914 E. 79th St.) is turning 90 years young–and he is celebrating in style. On Tuesday, Nov. 26, he will be entertained by none other than Mr. Bobby Rush. You can join the celebration, too! Tickets available at the club box office or call 773.874.1500

There was too much fun to be had in the last few weeks:
  • First, we went to the cheapest place you would ever want to drink in the city (Lizard's Liquid Lounge) on OCT 24 to see our favorite Canadian (HarpDog Brown) and his new Uptown Blues Band. Imagine a blues band without a screaming guitar. Seriously...you might like it. We certainly did.
  • Then we went to Bob's Blues and Jazz Mart  on OCT 26 to celebrate Bob Koester's 87th birthday with the Smiley Tillmon Band featuring Kate Moss. Bob's advice for a long, happy life: a good woman like Sue Koester. We agree!
  • We ended this period with a NOV 1 trip to Legends to see one of our favorite sax players, the talented Vanessa Collier. Opening act was local favorite, Rick King's Royal Hustle.
  • Wait 'til you see what is coming up in the next issue. Continued merriment and mirth.

NEW RECORDINGS
There is no rhyme and little reason to the CDs I choose to feature–except they seem interesting. It's a willy-nilly approach that works for me. Besides, I trust you to know what you like.

North Mississippi Allstars
 | Up and Rolling
RELEASE DATE:  10.4.2019 (New West Records)
Hard to imagine that there is anything that Luther Dickinson would do that I would not love. This CD is no exception.  It's got 12 tracks with guest appearances by Mavis Staples, Duane Betts and Cedric Burnside.

Joanna Connor | Rise
RELEASE DATE:  11.8.19 (M.C. Records)
Her first release in three years features a duet with Mike Zito, and includes 12 tracks (just two covers) and the addition of a keyboard and horns.
SIDE NOTE: Joanna was on WGN's Midday Fix today! Watch it now!

Fillmore Slim | Son of the Seven Sisters
RELEASE DATE:  8.17.19 (Fillmore Slim Media)
Slim's first release in 10 years features 13 tracks recorded at Kid Andersen's Greaseland Studios. Andersen plays guitar on several tracks and Rick Estrin also makes an appearance.
SIDE NOTE: The 85-year-old Slim has led a pretty colorful life...google it.

Bob Margolin | This Guitar And Tonight
RELEASE DATE:  10.25.9 (Vizz Tone)
Bob Margolin goes acoustic. WHAT? Alright, why not? Guests on this nine-track release include Bob Corritore and Jimmy Vivino on one track each.

GA-20 | Lonely Soul
RELEASE DATE:  8.30.19 (Karma Chief Records)
Two old friends get together to play the blues. I don't know Pat Faherty, but Matthew Stubbs is Charlie Miusselwhite's current guitar player–and that's enough for me.
SIDE NOTE: They are the opening band tonight at The Hideout if you are looking for something to start your weekend.
