In the immortal words of Bourbon 'n BrownTown alum Le Greta Hudson, "you say this is important but wherever you're spending your money, that's really what's important to you." Today marks Giving Tuesday, the international day of givingAs we enter the holiday season, often filled with spectacle, spending, and surplus, we are reminded of how money and economic systems control our world, shift power to the top, and prey on our every waking desire. Still, as a creative and movement-based organization we understand that, until true liberation, we can co-opt these tools to fight for (and fund) the equitable world we know is possible. With that, we ask that you help SoapBox and our broader community work towards a world we believe in and art that reflects that vision. After all, we all we got.

"Our Movements are Interconnected, Intersectional"

We were honored to receive our first grant from Crossroads Fund in 2019. We created this piece with the amazing grant funding organization this past fall to highlight the intersectional analysis in their grant-funding structure highlighting some of the organizations/coalitions that they fund -- Raise Your Hand (Illinois), #NoCopAcademy coalition, and the Street Vendors Association.

Crossroads Fund believes that we all deserve vibrant and healthy communities. Their grantees are mobilizing Chicagoans to build strong, intersectional movements, coalitions, and campaigns that are challenging the entrenched powers that perpetuate injustice. Crossroads Fund makes grants to those fighting for justice today because they are creating the victories we will celebrate tomorrow.

(Pictured top, Taee Savage; bottom, Tweak'G)

Chicago Drill and Activism (AKA "Chi DNA") is on the last leg of principal photography and starting the post-process soon! For those in the back, the Chi DNA feature documentary and larger cross-platform, multi-media project explores the creation, meaning, perspectives, and connections between drill rap and the resurgence of grassroots activism since the early 2010s through the eyes of the people involved. The feature documentary is a nuanced look at the interrelationship between drill rap and activism in Chicago as Tweak'G, independent rapper and activist, traverses many spaces while honing her sound and place in a misunderstood city.

Fitness Against Fascism 3: Prison-Industrial Complex & Healthy Communities

Fitness Against Fascism 3 (FAF3), hosted at Studio Three - River North, featured a bodyweight HIIT workout led by Coss Marte of Conbody, yoga flow by Mel Phillips, and a panel-led conversation with activists, community organizers, and formerly incarcerated citizens on the effect of the prison-industrial complex on healthy communities. Our third event in the series focused on the prison-industrial complex, mainstream views on police/prison reform, and abolition of said systems. In addition to the workouts, we discussed the pros/cons of the current narrative-shift, important personal experiences, and the physical/mental health effects mass racialized incarceration has at the individual, familial, and community level through an abolitionist framework.
