Out of the Box!

A SoapBox Celebration and Showcase

We are holding a celebration event to showcase our projects, entertain the community, and raise funds to continue our work and growth. Additionally, we will be sharing the space with some of our affiliates to strengthen awareness around their campaigns and recent work. Out of the Box will be a night of art, film, live performances, and collaboration amongst Chicago's most hard-working filmmakers, creatives, activists, and social entrepreneurs. Details are TBA but we are slated for a weekend in mid-to-late August. Stay tuned!

Calvin’s Story: Homeless Healer

This micro-documentary follows Calvin Curtiss, one of the countless homeless youths in Chicago and across the nation. The story tells how he became homeless, his daily activities and his dream of becoming a massage therapist in his own words. Calvin's Story is now an official selection in the Chicago Made Shorts and Global Impact Film Festival 2017! Come watch a screening with us and What Matters Productions in Millennium Park, Chicago, Illinois on Tuesday, August 29th right after The Princess Bride! #CalvinsStory

This non-profit pairs victims of destructive driving with donated vehicles and transportation opportunities through Lyft. They collaborate with strategic advocacy actions to ensure government legislation that supports safe roads. AUADD is now reaching and serving victims in 43 states and over 400 cities. SoapBox in Trumpland

SoapBox in Trumpland

SoapBox's first new media and cross-platform project of 2017 covers the grassroots opposition to the Trump Administration's agenda from the very first to the 100th day of his presidency. Utilizing film, editorial, social media, photography, and audio, we tell the story of the resistance. #SoapBoxInTrumpland #Resist

Chicago Drill & Activism

What started as a DePaul University graduate-level sociology thesis is now a SoapBox's multi-media and cross-platform project. The original study seeks to understand the creation, meaning, perspectives and potential connections between drill rap music and the resurgence of grassroots activism over the past five years. Chicago "DNA" features in-depth interviews with drill rappers, other independent artists, and various organizers and activists. It situates its findings into a broader theoretical framework and empirical history of systemic inequality and resistance.

Chicago DNA is ongoing! Check @ChiDrillandAct on Twitter and @SoapBoxPO on Twitter and Instagram for updates. Click here for the academic explanation and background. Full research paper and micro-docs coming soon! #ChiDNA

"Now, more than ever..."

Since November 8, 2016, we have heard this phrase non-stop. The truth is, the systemic oppression to which we are now more attune has always been there. The activists organizing against it have always been organizing. The conscious artists creating work to change the dominant narrative have always been creating. As technology and entertainment push the digital age forward, the need for inclusive communities of compassion, humanity, and justice continues to build. Our destinies are connected to each other. With that, we must remember that creative integrity and radical change are essential to our progress as a society.
