Industry Alert

Nov. 3 Supply Chain Disruption Briefing

In today’s update, a rail strike could occur in the United States as soon as Nov. 19, lockdowns weaken China’s air freight market, contract negotiations for U.S. West Coast dockworkers continue, and protests in Brazil hamper shipments of food, fuel and fertilizer.

Global container moves increased in Q3
In an indication of reduced congestion, the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) reports the third quarter saw domestic container numbers increase 1.5%, while international containers were up 0.1% year-over-year.

However, total intermodal volumes fell 1.0%, based on a 27.7% decline in intermodal trailer traffic.

The President and CEO of IANA, Joni Casey, said that she expects additional gains in the fourth quarter.

FAA ends slot waiver program
As demand for flights increases, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration is ending a pandemic-era policy forgiving unused airport slots.

Beginning this week, minimum slot usage requirements resumed at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport. Similar standard FAA processes have also resumed at Chicago O'Hare International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport and San Francisco International Airport. However, some exceptions may be granted on a case-by-case basis.
