Be Prepared for Big Storms and Spring Runoff
Alta and Little Cottonwood Canyon are experiencing one of the snowiest years in recorded history. As our historic snowpack continues to linger on roofs and steep slopes around town, please prepare yourself for extraordinary circumstances and help your community endure a challenging season by considering the following:
--Big spring snowstorms and historic snow cover throughout Little Cottonwood Canyon create the potential for destructive avalanche cycles and spring runoff events that could lead to prolonged road closures. Alta residents, guests, and property owners should always be prepared for long-duration disruptions to SR-210, Alta's only point of egress, by maintaining several days worth of food, water, essential medication, clothing, and any other supplies necessary to be in Alta for an extended period of time.
--In March, a child was rescued after being buried by snow sliding off a roof at a home on the Bypass Road, and on April 17th, a person was killed by a roof slide in Brighton. Stay away from snow covered roofs, and if you need to remove snow from a roof, consider hiring snow removal professionals who are trained and equipped to do so safely.
--As of April 21st, interlodge restrictions have been implemented 33 times this season, and SR 210 has been closed 41 times. Make sure you are connected with Alta Central through Twitter and Instagram so that you have the latest information about plans for road closures and interlodge travel restrictions. If you are present in Alta during a period of interlodge travel restrictions, remain indoors until Alta Central posts or transmits an official message lifting interlodge travel restrictions.
