Spring Runoff
Alta and Little Cottonwood Canyon are only beginning to melt out from under our historic snowpack. Be prepared for spring runoff activity over the coming weeks:
--As temperatures warm and the sun climbs higher in the sky, the risk of landslides, road washouts along Little Cottonwod Creek, and localized flooding will persist. Alta residents, guests, and property owners should always be prepared for long-duration disruptions to SR-210, Alta's only point of egress, by maintaining several days worth of food, water, essential medication, clothing, and any other supplies necessary to be in Alta for an extended period of time.
--A limited supply of sandbags are available for Alta residents and property owners in the northeast corner of the Wildcat Parking Lot. Salt Lake County has a much larger large stockpile of filled sandbags at the Public Works Sandbag Shed at 604 West 6960 South in Midvale. Salt Lake County provides 25 sandbags per vehicle, per day at this location. For more questions about sandbags, contact Chris Cawley at ccawley@townofalta.com.
--Stay away from Little Cottonwood Creek, which will be running fast and very cold through June, July, and potentially August. It is always illegal to enter Little Cottonwood Creek due to watershed regulations, and this spring, it may also be deadly.
--Make sure you are connected with Alta Central through Twitter and Instagram so that you have the latest information about road closures and other emergencies in the canyon.
--Visit Salt Lake County's "Runoff Ready" website for more information on spring runoff and flooding preparedness in Salt Lake County: https://slco.org/runoff
