December 2019

Dear ETP4HPC Members and Partners,

Around a year and a half ago, we started working on our Blueprint document, which was then published early this year. Its objective was to identify ‘the next big thing’, that is, the role HPC is going to play as HPC, Big Data, AI, IoT, etc, need to work together. It seems that the new paradigm will position HPC at the core of complex workflows and its task will be to enable operation and collaboration of the other technologies forming the system.

We are getting used to a new paradigm in the strategic realm, too. As the weight of decision-making (and funding) in the European HPC ecosystem has moved to the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, we have been learning to get the most out of our membership in and leadership of its Research and Innovation Advisory Group (RIAG). Our four representatives have been actively involved in defining the contents of the next EuroHPC Work Programme.

Linked to this is our Strategic Research Agenda (SRA 4), which RIAG will use to define its own Research Plan. SRA 4 will be released early in 2020. It needs to address the paradigm shift in the role of HPC as the enabling mechanism of complex workflows, and we have also ascertained that SRA 4 expresses in the most objective way possible the views of the European HPC value chain. We are confident that our SRA will be instrumental in defining the EuroHPC Research and Innovation programme.

For the first EuroHPC calls that will close in January 2020, we have implemented a mechanism to help our members prepare their projects. We have obtained answers on some complex questions from EuroHPC, and we have also put in place a networking forum, through which our Members can discuss call-related issues and look for partners.

The next General Assembly will be held on 4-5 March 2020 in Frankfurt. We are going to elect the new Steering Board for the next 2 years. I encourage all (Full) Members to be present and vote, and to submit their candidates to the Steering Board .

The bells are ringing and it is Christmas, New Year and in general the time of the year when people take a well deserved rest. Enjoy your time with family. Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year!

Handbook of European HPC projects

The 2019 edition of our handbook was distributed at SC19 and is available online. The Handbook is a very useful catalogue of on-going EC-funded HPC projects. Its increasing size (48 on-going projects) is a sign of the vitality of our European HPC landscape. It is prepared with the support of EXDCI[+]
SC19 BoF (Denver, 20 November 2019)
The new flavour of our SC19 BoF was unanimously appreciated: instead of presenting European and international updates, our BoF saw an extremely dynamic discussion on the Sisyphean task of adapting applications to the ever-changing heterogeneous architectures. Panelists from Europe and overseas were present to analyse this phenomenon. Presentations and pictures available on our website. [+]
Private online forum for our members

New on the ETP4HPC website: online Forum open exclusively to our members. Interact with other ETP4HPC members, find project partners, share your concerns. The Forum is open to any person affiliated to an ETP4HPC member organisation. Register and use it, this tool is what you make of it! [+]
New members
We recently welcomed:

EuroHPC call for procurement of 3 pre-exascale systems

The contracts with the 8 selected hosts of the pre-exascale and petascale systems were officially signed in Strasbourg on 26 November, 2019. This opened the way for the call for procurement of the 3 world-class pre-exascale supercomputers in Finland, Spain and Italy. [+]
General Assembly
