April-June 2018

ETP4HPC booth at ISC

Dear Partners,

We have closed another quarter of fruitful work in our fast changing environment. Much effort has been put in the ‘HPC Vision’, a document that will define our priorities for the post-Horizon 2020 era. We are not developing these guidelines in isolation – we are working closely with HiPEAC (our partners in the Embedded Systems area), we have enlisted the help of world-class experts, and we have opened the process to all ETP4HPC members. An important step was a successful workshop to launch the creation of our Vision – at this 24 June event in Frankfurt we learnt about the global HPC and related trends from the most reputable experts. In the coming months, we will continue this scoping work together with the BDVA and AIOTI associations.

The ‘HPC Vision’ document will be ready in Q1 2019. It will also form the basis of our next Strategic Research Agenda (SRA), work on which will start in 2019. There will be further workshops and opportunities for involvement – we value your opinions and it is one of the missions of the Steering Board and the Office to encourage all members to participate. Please watch out for further communication on this topic and visit our website for updates.

One of the key challenges for us in the coming months is to position our organisation within the new EuroHPC Joint Undertaking. We have been working closely with the EC on this topic and we have created a Working Group to define our strategy. As part of this work, we are expected to deliver an extract of our SRA to help define the EuroHPC work programme – you will receive an update on this process very soon.

Please enjoy the summer and renew your energy – there is important work to be done in the remaining part of the year!

Yours sincerely,

Jean-Pierre Panziera

The EuroHPC initiative is making progress: more countries have joined, the Council of the European Union has endorsed the Commission’s proposal to establish the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, and the European Parliament has voted in its favour. The 9th HPC Partnership Board meeting was held in Ljubljana on 29 May 2018 during the European HPC Summit Week. The DG Connect was represented by Leonardo Flores, and the meeting helped clarify the position and role of ETP4HPC in the new EuroHPC Joint Undertaking that is scheduled to begin operating on 1 Jan 2019.
ETP4HPC will play an advisory role, being part of the Industrial and Scientific Advisory Board of EuroHPC. In the coming months, ETP4HPC will define its exact involvement in this body.
ETP4HPC and HiPEAC co-organized a "post H2020 vision for HPC " workshop in Frankfurt, set up in 2 separate events. On Sunday, 24 June, a series of 7 talks by internationally recognized HPC experts presented major trends, new focus areas, technology innovations and new HPC use models. The use case areas ranged from traditional computing techniques to “HPC in the loop” and “HPC in cyber-physical environments”. Two take-away messages were that HPC, Data Analytics and AI will be much more integrated in future use scenarios than one could have foreseen. [+]

EHPCSW - 28 May to 1 June 2018 in Ljubljana (Slovenia)

ETP4HPC was very much part of this now traditional event in the European HPC ecosystem, with a keynote by our Chairman Jean-Pierre Panziera, a workshop on Energy efficiency in HPC organized by our Energy Efficiency Working Group, and several speakers among the members of our Steering Board. EHPCSW was also an opportunity to have many side events, such as an ETP4HPC Steering Board meeting and dinner, and an HPC cPPP partnership board meeting.
ISC - 24-28 June 2018
in Frankfurt (Germany)

As usual a large part of the worldwide HPC community was gathered in Frankfurt for ISC. This year ETP4HPC had decided to highlight the work of its SME members and hosted AppentraAsperitasIceotope, and Scapos on its booth.
Following the success of this activity, we will certainly repeat it with a larger booth next year!
Teratec Forum, 19-20 June 2018 in Palaiseau (near Paris)
ETP4HPC had a booth at the Teratec Forum – the largest HPC event in France with 1300 attendees. We were happy to host EXDCI. Member of ETP4HPC office Jean-Philippe Nominé was an invited speaker in the plenary session, with a presentation of the European HPC landscape.
We are hoping to be able to organise a BoF. Stay tuned !
ETP4HPC is candidate for a booth and for a networking session. More information to come in August!
