March 2020

Dear ETP4HPC Members and Partners,

The most significant issue we will have to face in the coming months is most certainly the current sanitary situation. Again, I would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by the late cancellation of our General Assembly on 5 March. It was not an easy decision to take at the time, but the rapid deterioration of the situation throughout Europe shows that the Steering Board was right to be prudent.

The main achievement of the last quarter is the publication of the fourth issue of our Strategic Research Agenda (SRA). This issue is yet another milestone in the evolution of our ecosystem. It is interesting to look back at the trajectory of our SRAs: SRA 1 looked at HPC system stack elements only, SRA 3 introduced Big Data and the concept of Extreme-Scale Demonstrators;. Then, our Blueprint (2019) proposed the concept of the Digital Continuum, which is expanded in this latest SRA 4 into the Digital Transcontinuum. This work is certain to continue into the next issues of the SRA.

I think the main achievement of our Association is that we have managed to build a very efficient, diverse, world-class mini-ecosystem of the internal and external experts contributing to SRA-related work. This enables us to fulfil our main mission: providing input to the EuroHPC Research and Innovation Advisory Board.

Our Association keeps growing. Our member count is at 96, close to the 100 mark, which we should reach before the end of the summer. Networking is a priority for most of our members and this is where our Office is going to place its efforts, considering the opportunities created by the newly announced EuroHPC 2020 calls. Not an easy task, taking into account the current restrictions.

I wish you all successful project preparation work!

Jean-Pierre Panziera
ETP4HPC Chairman

Strategic Research Agenda 4 is out!

Over 80 experts delegated by our members took part in in this huge collaborative work, supported by EXDCI-2. Our SRA comes out completely renewed, with a new structure, and more complete than ever. It is also more collaborative than ever: we have extended our collaborations beyond our long-time friends from BDVA, to organisations representing the related technologies that HPC must synchronise with: Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence and Cyber Physical Systems.
New in SRA 4 - research areas are grouped according to two overlapping layer dimensions: Research Domains and Research Clusters. Go to section 5.1 of the SRA to know all about Research Clusters and Research Domains!  [+]
Public Call for Comments on SRA 4

We invite comments from the wide public on our 4th Strategic Research Agenda (SRA 4).
Obtaining feedback from the HPC community at large helps us continuously improve the contents of our SRA. If you are an HPC expert and wish to comment on the contents of this document or make suggestions, please send us an email.

All-members call on 5 March 2020

This was not the General Assembly we had dreamt of... Our GA was cancelled due to the Covid-19 outbreak, but an all-members call took place on the day planned for the GA, to share information on our 2019 activities. It included a lively session dedicated to the SRA, with several presenters sharing snapshots of various aspects of the SRA: application co-design, mathematical methods and algorithms, data everywhere, trustworthy computing. The recording and slides are available in our Members' area.

We recently welcomed:
A description of the members who joined or upgraded in 2019 is featured in our Annual Report. [+]
Coming EuroHPC calls

The EuroHPC JU has published its Annual Workplan for 2020. Three calls are planned in 2020:  one will open in April, and the other two in July.  A short overview is available on our website.
ETP4HPC can help our members find partners to answer these calls. Use our private Forum to post your requests, or contact our Office. [+]
New ETP4HPC representative in RIAG

Jean Gonnord (CEA), one of the founding fathers of ETP4HPC, retired from his role in the Steering Board. Jean was also one of our representatives in the EuroHPC RIAG. The SB therefore elected Jean-Philippe Nominé to replace him in this role. Jean-Philippe is the new representative of the CEA in the SB, and is very familiar with our work as he coordinated the ETP4HPC Office for many years. Our warmest thanks to Jean for his heartfelt commitment to European HPC and European technologies, and good luck to Jean-Philippe in his new role!
EuroHPC Summit Week, Porto, Portugal

Teratec Forum, Palaiseau, France
16-17 June, 2020

This year again ETP4HPC will be exhibiting at the Teratec Forum - hopefully the Covid-19 outbreak will be under control by then. Our booth will be at the heart of "Europa Village", a new space that will gather the European HPC ecosystem - projects as well as institutions. [+]
ISC 2020, Frankfurt, Germany
22-25 June, 2020

We have secured the same centrally-located booth we had last year, and we invite again 4 of our SME members to co-exhibit. We also submitted a proposal for a BoF, jointly with our member Appentra.
We are planning to organise a networking event for our members, to replace the Networking dinner that was to take place before the cancelled GA. Stay tuned! [+]
