Dear <<First Name>>,

“I lift my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth…” (Psalm 121)

Grace and peace to you all in this unsettling time. The same God that gathers us as a church together will watch over us as a church spread out across the whole world. Whether we find ourselves in homes, hotels or hospitals, God will find us. Wherever we are, God is there to help and to comfort. God will be God.

Only last week, I wrote to you about how we would BE THE CHURCH even as our building closed and our activities cancelled. Our ministry has continued in bold generosity and service, and you can read about it below.

The Council met this week, and we discussed at length how much we will need one another and the world will need us to BE THE CHURCH at this critical moment. Together we have been planning, reacting and imagining what that will look like.

A friend of mine said that the church right now should be “socially distant, spiritually close.” The plans below will offer all of us ways to maintain social distance while drawing closer to God and to one another. We have social gatherings, moments of spiritual pause, Christian education offerings, and continued worship and music in the coming week. We will see what works best, change and adapt is the situation unfolds.

For now, though, I want to remind all of us that we will be able to BE THE CHURCH because we can trust that GOD WILL BE GOD. No matter what comes, God will always be about the work of peace, healing and salvation. On that we can stake our hope and our faith.

AIC has been able to BE THE CHURCH this week by:
  • Keeping the Soup Kitchen open with a skeletal staff and takeaway service, feeding 100+ people daily.
  • Continuing the Cold Weather Shelter beyond our normal Wednesday commitment, hosting 5 of the last 8 nights, to ensure the guests remain sheltered during the lockdown. This is due to remarkable and unrelenting effort from Jonathan Miller.
  • Gathering to livestream worship with our musicians one final time on Sunday. The video remains available, with worship and prayers here and the sermon here.
  • Checking in with every household via text, phone or e-mail, to support one another. As of this time, we do not know of anyone in our community yet diagnosed with COVID-19. Let us know if you need help during this time, and we will do our best.
  • Praying, always. Your ministry staff has shared concerns and prayed together for all of you, especially for: health care workers among us, those separated from loved ones, older or vulnerable people, and those facing financial hardship or job loss.
  • Supporting our staff, many of whom have been furloughed, by maintaining their salaries for the month of April, in addition to accessing government wage support.
  • Connecting with our children through a mid-week children’s message prepared by Pastor Jared Jaggers and available below or here on YouTube.
  • Meeting as your Council to lay plans to ensure the financial health and continued ministry of AIC during this crisis and beyond.
AIC will BE THE CHURCH in the coming week with these events.
Remember that GOD WILL BE GOD and join us!

Tuesday and Thursday – Pause for Prayer
Even staying home, life feels hectic and crowded at the moment. Every Tuesday and Thursday, we will share a short (4-6 minute) video inviting you to Pause for Prayer, introducing a guided spiritual practice to centre your heart on God. The first one is below.

Wednesday – Children’s Message
We want to stay connected with our children and help them cope with this situation as well, so we’ll offer a weekly video on YouTube for families to share. And adults might just discover a word of comfort for themselves as well. The first one is below.

Daily Devotionals
Our People’s Messiah daily email meditations will continue through Easter.

Plans are underway separately for a youth group gathering, choir meet-up, and staff happy hour via Zoom. Check your e-mail if you are part of any of those groups.
We need your support to BE THE CHURCH.
We know that many people are facing challenging financial circumstances. AIC is in a solid position to weather the loss of Latchcourt income, but we will be relying more than usual on gifts from the congregation to keep our ministries going, our staff supported and our income flowing. If you are in a position to do so, we would ask you to consider making a special gift to support the church at this time, or to pay your 2020 pledge now, rather than across the course of the year.

You may give via bank transfer with the following information:
Beneficiary: The American Church in London
Sort Code: 40-05-16
Account Number: 81651498

A note on technology:

Zoom is an online platform to host video chat. It is free to use, but may require you to download an app to your phone, tablet or laptop.

Facebook will also host all our videos, including worship, Pause for Prayer and children’s messages. You do not need to have a Facebook account to view them, only to comment or engage.

AIC now has a YouTube channel. Subscribe or visit anytime for the latest worship services, pause for prayer moments, children’s messages and more.
