Dear <<First Name>>,

First, an update on our plans, and their undoing:

Unfortunately, the rapid rise in COVID cases and move to Tier 3 in London this week has led us to the difficult decision to suspend in-person Sunday services for the time being, though we will still offer an outdoor Christmas Eve service.

I know this news is disappointing to all of us, especially your ministers and musicians, but it feels like the right thing to do. While places of worship are allowed to open even in Tier 3, we do not think it is wise for our particular congregation because we travel via public transit and gather from across many boroughs.

From the beginning, we have prioritized the spiritual and physical well-being of all our neighbours, especially the most vulnerable among us. Although we remain confident that what we do in worship at AIC is COVID Secure, we believe that stepping back from gatherings right now sends an important message of care and compassion for our community.  Other venues with similar risks (like restaurants and theatres) will be closed to prevent the spread of the virus, and we want to lead, not follow, in making sacrifices for the good of others.

Even so, we recognise that the danger of social isolation is also important, especially at Christmas. With that in mind, we will still hold an in-person Christmas Eve service at 18:00. We will meet outdoors in front of the church, and you can register here

We will review these decisions after the first of the year, and be in touch with our regular weekly email as plans unfold.

Then, a reminder that God still comes at Christmas:

Nothing can stop God's love from coming to us at Christmas. Alone or together, when we are ready or not, in good times and difficult ones, in life and in death, God shows up to live among us, love us and show us grace.

The whole message of Christmas is that God abides with us, here, where we are, on earth. Take time to remember that.

Light candles in your home for Advent, and for Christmas Eve. Watch worship online--ours on Sundays and one of the brilliant cathedral lessons & carols services on Christmas Eve. Pray. Call family and friends on the phone or FaceTime or Zoom. Sing carols, even all alone, at the top of your voice at home. Drop goodies or cards on neighbour's doorsteps, especially those who might be alone.

And every time you do, know that God joins in.

Pastor Jennifer
