Dear <<First Name>>,
We often sing at Christmas: dona nobis pacem, grant us peace. Yet again this year, we yearn for peace in our world and in our anxious hearts this Christmas season.
Yet our Advent song on Sunday is a song of that promise fulfilled, peace obtained. It is sung by Simeon, a man in his elder years who has prayed all his life to meet the Messiah. He meets Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus when they bring the eight-day-old child to the temple to be dedicated. Simeon sees the Christ child and proclaims he can depart in peace. His life is complete, and he is ready and able to face the future (and his own death) unafraid.
On Sunday, we will offer prayers for peace, but we will also listen to Simeon's song, and wonder about what might give us peace and courage to live all our days at peace and unafraid.
