Dear <<First Name>>,

If you've spent any time reading the Bible, especially the Old Testament, you've stumbled across whole chapters with lists of names. Ezra and Nehemiah have many such chapters, detailing which family rebuilt which portion of the ruins in Jerusalem.

Whether it's the "begats" of genealogy or the accounting for roles in building and rebuilding the Temple, most of us wonder why any of it matters thousands of years later.

As we hear more of the story of Nehemiah leading and inspiring the people to the work of rebuilding, I've been thinking about the people themselves, all those names.

Nehemiah had prayers and visions, skills and leadership, but none of that was sufficient to rebuild anything. For that, he needed people. God needed people--individual people with particular skills and gifts, willing to share them for the good of all.

That is still true today. Our church can have all the vision and prayer and ideas we want, but we can only do what you--this congregation, with your gifts and talents--can and will undertake.

As your pastor, I am constantly in awe of just what God can do with the likes of us.

This Sunday, in worship, we will reflect on how God works in and through individuals like us. Then, after worship at the AGM, we will make our own list of names as the members gather to take important action together. You and your presence matter!

Pastor Jennifer

The members of the American International Church are strongly encouraged to attend our Annual General Meeting on September 26, immediately after worship. The agenda includes review of the 2021 budget, election of officers (those provisionally appointed at our April Zoom meeting), formal resolutions to transfer assets and operations to our new UK registered charity, and conversation on diversity and inclusion at AIC. Announcements were sent by post and a full briefing via email on Monday. For a copy by post, please contact Church Administrator Chris Omaweng at

Join us on Sundays at 11:00 a.m. Choir and children's message return, communion will be served, and we will be able to sing together throughout the service.

Reminder of our COVID protocols:
  1. Face coverings over the nose and mouth are required to attend worship.
  2. Pews are marked with signage and lines indicating 1m social distance, so that it is easy to choose a seat that maintains appropriate space.
  3. Sign-in is now optional, using either the NHS app or paper sign-in sheet.
  4. All are required to use hand sanitizer upon entry to the building.
  5. Fellowship time remains outside, as outdoor gathering is much safer than indoors.

Autumn Plans for Children & Youth

As more of our community is regathering in person, we are helping our young people find a place to belong in the church; to help them know they are at home in the house of God.

  • Babies aged 0-3 are welcome in our crèche or to remain with parents in the sanctuary.
  • Our children ages 4-9 are welcome as part of our worshiping community, with a special place for them to worship through creativity and play in our PrayGround.
  • Children 10+ are encouraged to sit with their family and join in worship.
  • 26 September, After-church Sunday school 12:30-14:00. Lunch will be provided with activities and a lesson. All children and youth are welcome. Location will be outside as weather permits, returning to AIC by 14:00, or in the AIC building in poor weather.

We hope to see you and your children soon!

Pastor Jared

Support Afghan Refugees in London

Due to our work with the Soup Kitchen, Cold Weather Shelter and West End Welcome refugee sponsorship, local government officials have reached out to our church requesting urgent involvement. I have been in multiple meetings so far, learning how we can respond with support and resources.

Around 8,000 Afghans have been welcomed to the UK with little to no wraparound support. Many are now finishing quarantine and being moved into bridging hotels for the next three to six months. Three of these hotels are located in South Camden near the church, and additional ones are near our borough borders in Westminster and Islington. In Camden alone, more than 1,700 Afghans have been welcomed in the past week, over 700 of whom are children.

At AIC, we are having urgent conversations as to how we might best support our new neighbors, no matter how long they are with us. We are actively talking with local government, community partners and volunteers to see how we might be placed to offer critical resettlement support to the arriving families, building upon the experience gained through our refugee sponsorship program which has been running for three years. And we will be needing your support! Look out for more communication in the days and weeks ahead, and also begin considering how you might personally support and welcome those arriving.

If you would like to get involved now, you can support those families arriving in Camden by purchasing urgent supplies via the council's Amazon Wishlist. In Westminster, you can already begin to offer practical and/or befriending support. Please do get in touch with me at if there are other ways in which you would like to be involved.
