“Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations,
I am exalted in the earth
.”
(Psalm 46:10)

Dear <<First Name>>,

Welcome to our third week of Lent!

This week, the object for your altar and to guide your reflection is a tea bag.

Finding some time and space in a busy day to be quiet and still can be really difficult. And yet, the scripture above is one of the most famous of the Psalms and invites us to "be still and know" who God is.

This Psalm invites us to stop; to acknowledge our own limits and to humbly turn our attention to God as the Exalted One. The truth is that knowing God in this way requires some mental space and quiet so that we can use our holy imaginations and listen with our spiritual ears. We know that God is present with us at all times, but we have to use our imagination and our spiritual attention to know God in our daily lives.

So, I invite you to join me this week in using your cup of tea (or coffee, or whatever beverage you prefer) to guide you into a moment to find stillness, to find some quiet, and to imagine and listen for God. If you're like me, you have a steady flow of hot drinks throughout the day – so use each cup to pause for a few seconds or a couple minutes to listen for God. Or maybe try a beverage outside of your normal routines as an opportunity to stop and take a break from your day in the presence of the Holy Spirit. Maybe you even need to take your tea outside and get your body moving to find "stillness" in your mind and spirit.

However you choose to find God through a tea bag this week, may you find some stillness and peace that reveals the presence of God in your life.

Rest assured that you are held in the grace of God and in my prayers,
Pastor Jared

O God, we pray this day:

for all who have a song they cannot sing,

for all who have a burden they cannot bear,

for all who live in chains they cannot break,

for all who wander homeless and cannot return,

for those who are sick and for those who tend them,

for those who wait for loved ones

and wait in vain,

for those who live in hunger

and for those who will not share their bread,

for those who are misunderstood

and for those who misunderstand,

for those who are captives and for those who are captors,

for those whose words of love are locked within their hearts

and for those who yearn to hear those words.

Have mercy upon these, O God.

Have mercy upon us all.

This week's object is explained above. Below are the objects you can add for the coming weeks.
  • Stone – a small stone for each member of your household; make sure it will fit in your hand and in a pocket.
  • Chocolates – a piece of chocolate for each member of your household; fair trade if at all possible.
Choose a Traditional Lenten Fast and Focus on Serving Others
  • Click here to download a calendar of "40 acts" to show love toward someone else that day. (It has been created for children, but is suitable for children of all ages!)
  • Sign up for International Justice Mission's “Slave Free Lent” – https://www.ijmuk.org/slavefreelent - IJM will send you text messages with ideas for how take action against human trafficking.
