January 2020 Update

Your monthly update from the DYW West team.
Careers Events

Over the month of January, The DYW West team have been to a few careers events at schools in various regions and we're just getting started! We've been to Johnstone HS, Mary Russell School, Trinity HS and Dumbarton Academy and we have 12 more planned for 2020 so far!
Each school has attracted a great range of employers for pupils to learn from and talk to about their industry.

British Airways Tour

Clarke and Dennie visited Elaine Lawson at British Airways Maintenance earlier this month. Elaine very kindly gave them both a tour of their operation and were able to see first hand the intricate maintenance programme their fleet goes through at their site at Glasgow Airport. We have worked closely with Elaine over the last few years as she works in the local area with schools to help inspire young people and let them get an insight into working in Engineering as well as offering young people a chance at Work Experience at their site and a potential career through their Apprenticeship Programme.

West College Scotland Foundation Apprenticeships
We are helping West College Scotland source employer placements for Foundation Apprenticeship students. Placements are typically a day a week during school term in 6th year. Areas we need more employers are:
Engineering: Inverclyde – 6 | West Dunbartonshire – 10 | East Renfrewshire – 4 | Renfrewshire - 7
Creative & Digital Media (doesn't need to be a creative, can be a marketing dept in a business) - West Dunbartonshire – 4 | East Renfrewshire – 3 | Renfrewshire – 4 |
•  Same level as a Higher
• Learning about the industry and doing real work that they can evidence against the framework for their qualification
• Can act as a long interview – could lead to an employer offering them a job as a MA or Graduate Apprentice
• Employer does not need to pay during the FA placement
Typically start after the summer (but can be earlier) – we're being asked to start conversations with industry now.
