Young Person's Guarantee

You may have noticed social media posts over the last few weeks regarding Young Person’s Guarantee (YPG). The YPG is a commitment to bring together employers, partners and young people. Young people aged 16-24 in Scotland will be provided with the opportunity of a job, placement, training or volunteering with employers.
We already have a great list of employers who have joined the YPG.

What are the aims of Young Person’s Guarantee?

  • To prepare young people for the world of work through engaging with education, work experience and work-based learning opportunities
  • Engage with and provide opportunities to young people who face barriers to work
  • Create apprenticeships, training and upskilling opportunities for young people
  • Create jobs and opportunities for young people
  • Create an inclusive workplace to enable young people to meet their potential

My Climate Path

Launching September 2021, My Climate Path is an education legacy initiative for Scotland's young people led by DYW Glasgow and supported by DYW West & DYW LED. Designed to maximise #COP26 it supports the Scottish Government's Young Person's Guarantee commitment to every 16-24 year old in Scotland of an opportunity that will positively impact their future.

DYW are looking for"climate heroes" (industry partners and passionate individuals) to help influence and inspire our young people on the career pathways to enter the new green economy. We want various industries to demonstrate to young people that all sectors of Scotland’s economy are needed to come together to support Scotland’s ambitious climate goals.

DYW Schools Coordinators

As a result of further Scottish Government funding to DYW West and allocated to each of the 4 local authorities in our region - every secondary school now has an allocated DYW  School coordinator. Working closely with ourselves, education colleagues and partners such as SDS - their role is to help even more young people due to the negative impact Covid has had. They will be maximising existing and helping develop new employer partnerships, promoting awareness of apprenticeships, college/uni, volunteering and helping reduce the number of young people that leave school that don't reach a positive destination.

STEM West 2021

No Wrong Path

On Tuesday 10th August, young people around Scotland received their exam results. #nowrong path was a social media campaign led by DYW across Scotland to provide reassurance to young people that there is #nowrongpath to where they want to go in life and that their exam results are not always the key to future success. All over Scotland people were posting their #nowrongpath success stories on social media.

An Open Letter To Young People

This past year has been a year like no other and understand that the impact on young people has been significant.

Official SQA results were issued on 10th August, this was used as an opportunity to communicate through an ‘open letter to young people’ that Scotland’s industry and employers stand in support of them, recognise their qualifications, and congratulate them on their achievements.

A number of employers and industry organisations posted the letter on their websites and socials to show support to young people.

DYW Summer Leavers Programme - DYW Skills Academy

Last year, DYW created their summer leavers programme, “DYW Skills Academy” and brought it back for another year this July and August. The Skills Academy was aimed at supporting young people leaving school in the summer to take their next steps in life.
DYW put together several sessions to support young people, parents and carers, which was delivered through Scotland’s Biggest Parents’ Events (SBPE).
