Invest in Renfrewshire and DYW West;
Supporting Local Employers

Invest and DYW West recently partnered together on an event held at Hillington Park (Scotland's largest business park) to showcase the support both organisations can provide to Renfrewshire employers. 40 people enjoyed a networking breakfast and some quick info updates on the different areas Invest and DYW West can offer support. DYW West and Invest in Renfrewshire will be on site and holding regular surgeries within Hillington Park Innovation Centre.

Next month’s surgery will be Wednesday 7th June 2017 13.00 – 16.00 – Please come along!

Jobs Fairs

DYW West was involved in two very well attended jobs fairs recently. The Invest 500 jobs event at Paisley Town Hall and the West Dunbartonshire Clydebank Jobs Fair at the new leisure centre. Across both events approximately 2,000 people attended. We engaged with dozens of young people; talking about subject choices, careers paths, skills employers are looking for and helping them make the most of these events as they are a great opportunity for young people to engage with employers from many different industries and sectors.

Running out of our popular
"Hints ‘n Tips" leaflets and the DYW West pens is always a sign of a busy event!

STEM East Renfrewshire

We arranged STEM events for East Renfrewshire schools recently - involving sport and virtual reality with West College Scotland and SGN (previously Scottish Gas Network) provided a whole host of activities aligned to SGN careers. Thank you to the college and SGN for offering these important inspiring events to the schools!

Skills Ambassadors in Action

DYW West along with a number of Skills Ambassadors from Renfrewshire (our Director, Bob Davidson is one himself) took part in a full mock interview process at Johnstone High School. The pupils had to present themselves at reception as if attending a real life interview, with a CV and a cover letter. The students got the chance to experience the level of skill required in interviewing successfully and got top tips from the Skills Ambassadors on how to sell themselves to an employer.

The standard was excellent and a credit to the school and all the young people involved helping prepare themselves for the world of work. Skills Ambassadors are mentors for schools - and in Renfrewshire are delivered in partnership with Renfrewshire Chamber & the Joint Employabilty Project at Renfrewshire Council. We are in discussion to extend Skills Ambassadors to other authorities in the West.

The Power of Social Media

DYW West is continually sharing updates across social media of the opportunities within the region for young people. Recently, when Rolls Royce told us they were recruiting 15 Modern Apprentices at their site in Inchinnan, our Facebook post in particular went crazy. The post was shared 563 times, reached almost 97,000 people, liked 47 times and commented on over 150 times by people tagging friends and relatives to alert them of the opportunities with the well-respected company in the West.

Bloodhound Challenge at West College Scotland

The Energy Skills Partnership and pupils from Johnstone High School had a blast building & racing rocket cars at West College Scotland. The Bloodhound Challenge is using a 1,000mph world land speed record attempt to inspire the next generation to get involved in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The pupils had a great day learning about rocket science and engineering and even beat our very own Gary Murray!
Whitelee Wind Farm Tour

24 S1 Scientists from Gryffe High School thoroughly enjoyed a workshop, exhibition and tour recently at Whitelee Windfarm. The pupils learned all about the importance of 'pitching' turbine blades, before touring the 215 Wind Turbines.
