Your monthly update from the DYW West team.
As a part of Year of Young People we are asking employers to get involved with their local schools/colleges to help develop and inspire the future workforce.

Could you support schools by bringing the curriculum to life, offering work experience, site tours, talks or a dedicated programme to suit the needs of your industry. Whatever size, all companies are welcome!

On 5th June, Inverclyde held their Bloodhound heat at Port Glasgow Community Campus where pupils from Clydeview Academy, Port Glasgow High School, St. Stephen's High School, Inverclyde Academy, St. Columba's High School and Notre Dame High School took part in designing and racing their rocket cars.

Well done to all those that took part and a big well done to Clydeview Academy's team 'CV1' who had the best time of the day - 52mph!


On 8th June, Renfrewshire held their Bloodhound heat at Gleniffer High School where pupils from St. Andrew's High School, St. Benedict's High School, Gleniffer High School, Trinity High School, Park Mains High School, Paisley Grammar and Linwood High School took part on the day.

The best time on the day was an impressive 57mph which is the fastest time this year from Paisley Grammar's team 'Shrek'. Well done!

Also a big thank you to Arnold Clark and GTG Training for bring along their STEM bus which allowed the pupils to take part in interactive tasks on the day!

Claire and Emily in our team have been visiting St. Joseph's Primary School to talk to the P6 and P7's about teamwork, employability skills and Modern Apprenticeships as a part of their 'World of Work Week'.

They even got a chance to have their say on what Education should be like in Scotland as a part of Year of Young People 2018!

On Tuesday 12th of June, 200 young people from across the West region took part in the Big Bang Scotland Fair, organised by the Energy Skills Partnership and hosted at Perth College UHI.

Participants were given the opportunity to engage with a range of organisations from training providers to international employers; through a host of interactive activities from virtual reality simulators to building suspension bridges.

The Scottish Finals of the Bloodhound Challenge took place on the day with over half of the participating teams being students from secondary schools across the West region.

We ran 4 heats across 4 local authorities and in total we had 603 pupils take part in Bloodhound this year!

Well done to St. Columba's team ZAL who came in 3rd place with an amazing time of 49 mph! And well done to Clydeview Academy's team 'Dean Machine' who came in first with an impressive time of 51mph!

Also thank you to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Arnold Clark STEM Bus and CCG for coming along on the day also.

On 5th June female pupils from Gleniffer High School attended Arnold Clark's Dare to be Different and won the pitstop challenge and jigsaw challenge. 

On 6th June the females from the West College Scotland All Star racing team were STEM Ambassadors for primary school pupils at Arnold Clark's for Dare to be Different.

An amazing two days inspiring the future generation of female engineers! Thank you to Arnold Clark and Dare to be Different for giving almost 200 females over the two days an amazing experience and encouraging them to dare to be different with their future careers!
A massive well done to the West College Scotland All Star's Racing Team for winning 1st place in the kit car category, an award for best use of digital technology and 2nd place out of 15 teams in the overall race at Aberdeen. Also well done to Emma Gormley for winning the fastest lap with a time of 32MPH.

On the 19th June, we held our Inverclyde Hospitality Takeover in conjunction with West College Scotland where Inverclyde pupils got to learn about jobs within the hospitality sector and even got the chance to make scones and pipe chocolate.

A huge thank you to Claire and Colin from the Holiday Inn Express for delivering their 'Customer Service Challenge' and Jennifer and Andrew from Riverside Inverclyde for promoting Taste Inverclyde on the day to inspire the future stars of hospitality and thank you to West College Scotland for hosting the two days!

On 20th June, we held our Paisley and Clydebank Hospitality Takeover in conjunction with West College Scotland where East Renfrewshire and West Dunbartonshire pupils learned about budgeting/event planning, different sectors within Hospitality and the different types of jobs you can get. They also got to make their own ice-cream and cakes on the day. 
Congratulations to our Greenpower students who all graduated from the West College Scotland Greenpower Programme this month. We are proud of each one of you and you all have extremely bright futures ahead of you. You are all a credit to your schools.

Students from the course are now in full time apprenticeships with Arnold Clark and Jaguar Land Rover and going to college to do full time courses. We wish you all the best!

On 6th June, our team were exhibiting at the Invest in Renfrewshire Recruitment and Training Event at the Tannahill Centre.

A great morning filled with employers from different sectors. Thank you for inviting us along!
Congratulations to the St. Columba's High School Link Teachers Miss Thomson and Mrs Quinn for winning the Link Teacher of the Year award at the Young Enterprise Finals at Hampden on 6th June! 
A number of S6 pupils across the West region after the summer will be starting the 2nd year of their Foundation Apprenticeships. This part is based in industry and pupils need to undertake a meaningful work placement of 1 day or 2 half days for the period Sep-Apr with an employer in or near the West region e.g. Renfrewshire, East Ren, Inverclyde and West Dunbartonshire ( and can extend into other areas such as Glasgow). We are helping source employers in the Civil Engineering and IT: Software Development sectorss. If this is something you can help with or know someone who might be able to offer a placement(s) please get in touch. Thank you

Our team had a great night at the Inverkip Chartroom for the annual Inverclyde Chamber Bee's Knees Awards on 8th June - Well done to all the winners from the night!
