Lifeline Newsletter - July 2016
Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Alexander and Crown Princess Katherine visited the Clinical Hospital Center Bezanijska Kosa and delivered ten electric beds for intensive care with a total value of 40,000 euros to this health institution. This donation was enabled by the Lifeline Chicago Humanitarian Organization, whose patron is HRH Crown Princess Katherine, Dr. Danijel Djuraskovic Megler and TRIMEDIX Foundation.
In 1944, more than 500 US airmen trapped behind enemy lines were rescued right under the noses of the Germans, thanks to the courage of brave Serbian Chetnik fighters. This rescue mission occurred near Cacak, in the little town of Prijani.  This historical event motivated the Pittsburgh Tri –State Committee to seek a project in Cacak to honor the brave Chetniks who rescued the US airmen.

The Pittsburgh Tri-State Committee chose a project at Osnova Skola, a facility built over 50 years ago and in significant dispair.  The 230 students are this school were often instructed to keep their winter coats on all day just to keep warm because the rotting windows allowed cold air to seep inside during the harsh winter months.

The success of Pittsburgh's March 2016 fundraiser and the committee's desire to commemorate the bravery of the Chetniks made it possible to have all new windows installed in the school. The families of the Osnova Skola community benefitted from the improvements to the school building, which also created jobs in the community for many local craftsmen.

The social events shown on our calendar form the foundation of Lifeline's ability to contribute to the needs of the underserved in Serbia. We are proud of the fact that the money raised at these events contributes significantly to improving the quality of life for people who have no means to help themselves.

The Associates have made improving care for the elderly in Serbia a centerpiece of their mission. The 2015 annual cruise sponsored by the Associates raised enough funds to contribute to several projects throughout 2016. Last month, our newsletter featured a story about a donation made to Kovin Psychiatric Hospital from the fundraising activities of the Associates.  Their activities also raised enough funds to purchase wheelchairs, commodes and personal care garments for an old age shelter in Belgrade, raising the quality of care afforded to these people.

More Information
Lifeline Chicago is launching its annual Christmas fundraising campaign soon and we have 477 children on our list this year.  These children have never had new clothing and personal items and are living in orphanages and shelters throughout Serbia. Our goal for 2016 is to outfit these children with shoes, clothing and personal items that will last them throughout a growth cycle. The cost for this is $232.30 per child.  If your organization or group is interested in sponsoring some of these children, please contact us or click to donate.  A donation of any size will help us meet our goals.

Project D.O.V.E., Developing Opportunity for Vocation through Education, is an initiative currently underway at Lifeline Chicago. The goal of Project D.O.V.E. is to develop a business readiness program and certification process to be administered to the residents in battered women’s shelters in Serbia. Much in the way of resources is needed and funding for Project D.O.V.E. will come from several sources.

We have the power to support this critical initiative by sharing the art of Serbian cooking!  Our chair for this Serbian cookbook project is Judy Mihajlovich (lifecook2016@gmail.com), who will be reaching out to every kolo in the United States to contribute to this exciting project. We need help securing the contacts and addresses for each kolo in all 50 states.  If you are a kolo president or can provide information on how to reach your kolo, please reach out to either Judy or our office with this information.  Judy and her committee look forward to working with all of you as the project progresses.
The Ambassadors for Lifeline held several fundraisers in 2015 which helped the children in the Vasa Stajic Shelter. The proceeds from these fundraisers made it possible to repair broken windows, peeling paint and replace old bathrooms for the benefit of over 75 abused and abandoned children, some of which are victim of human trafficking and mental illness. The monies from the Ambassador events also purchased four new TVs for the shelter.
