The Downtown Arts District Association (DADA) in recognition of the biannual “Black Theatre Festival” and in honor of one of our 2019 Sponsors “The ARTC Theatre” and DADA Members “Spring Theatre” and “Piedmont Opera” presents the August installment of The DADA 1st Friday Gallery Hop - “Theatre Hop!” 

FEATURED EXHIBITION: The DADA Members Gallery at North Trade Street Arts - 604-A N Trade st - presents the DADA Members sumner Exhibition “EMOTE”

The 600 block of Trade is also excited to host local high school students who will transform a Trade Street parking space into a pop up park during this month's gallery hop! Track the progress beginning July 29-August 2 on Facebook and Instagram: #popupws 

The 600 block of Trade will also host our growing collection of photo stations, street chalk for you to create your own masterpiece, hula hoops and bubbles. 


HOP FEATURES:
New Gallery Exhibition Openings, Open Studios, Shop Collection Openings and DADA business location participation throughout the Arts District.

The Gallery Hop Extension will be in full swing on both sides of the 700 block of Trade and at DADA locations on Angelo, Ninth and MLK Jr. Streets.


 

August 2019 Hop Schedule
 

6 PM - 500/600 block of N. Trade and Sixth Street from Cherry to Liberty closes for Hop. Other areas in Arts District are not blocked. 

7-10 PM - Hop Begins in the W-S Downtown Arts District

Streets reopen at 10:30 for regular traffic

DADA Members in the 500, 600 and 700 block of Trade, Sixth Street, and the Gallery Hop extensions centered around Wise Man Brewing, Bookmarks and the Liberty Street Hop area will also be participating. Look for the DADA Members logo displayed and support our DADA Members! 


It's the August installment of the DADA 1st Friday Gallery Hop and you're invited!

Parking is available at the 6th and Cherry St. Deck for only $2.00! Free parking is also available along Liberty Street on a first come, first served basis. The W-S Downtown Arts District is waiting for you!

The Winston-Salem artist transfers his emotions and memories to the canvas through the use of layered texture and color.

Studio 7, 204 W 6th St, will be hosting artist CK Thompson during the month of August. Thompson's art expresses emotions and tells a story. Her use of mixed media combines fine art skills and graffiti. Opening August 2, for DADA's 1st Friday Gallery Hop, the show will hang throughout the month. Studio 7 is open extended hours through August, Wednesday through Saturday from 1-6 pm, by appointment and by chance. Call 336-408-9739 or email studio7ws@gmail.com.

The McNeely Pop Up Gallery (inside ARTC Theatre, 110 W 7th St), will host artist Tammy Willard (#earth_and_ink_nc) painting live at the theatre on August 2, beginning at 7 pm, during the DADA 1st Friday Gallery Hop. Weather permitting, she will be painting a new mural on the side of the theatre. The mural will provide new photo opportunities for visitors. In case of rain, she will be located inside the theatre. Stop by and say, "Hey!"




 
Live on street performance from two of the best! Spring Theatre will be bringing Erinn Dearth, Founder, and Dan Beckmann, Artistic Director, to the August Gallery Hop to preview Spring Theatre’s upcoming show Duet. Duet is a lop-sided romp through the long and storied history of the musical theatre twosome. If you love the preview—and you know you will—then we encourage you to buy tickets to the show: https://www.intothearts.org/events-info/DUET or 336-747-1414. Show dates are August 20 and 21, 2019, and the venue is the new Reynolds Place Theatre located at 251 Spruce Street North in Winston-Salem.
Anne Murray, specializing in bookbinding, papermaking, marbling, and book repair, will be demonstrating marbling with acrylic paints. Marbling involves floating pigments on water and creating design with a variety of tools and methods. Visitors will have an opportunity to participate, transforming a blank sheet of paper into a work of art suitable for a variety of artistic purposes. Demo will be in parking lot at 629 N. Trade Street (7 - 9 pm)
First Friday Gallery Hop and Print Sale! Bowman Gray will be at gallery VI
from 6-9pm with selected prints for sale. At $150 each, they are far less expensive than his actual metal images.. It will be a long time before he does a print run like this again, so if you've been considering it, now is the time.

A Staged Reading

Based on the book From Pawns to Kings by Eugene Brown, join us for the first public reading of Brown’s new play. Eugene Brown is a North Carolina author and playwright, whose book is the basis of the movie “The Life of a King,” starring Cuba Gooding, Jr. His motivational Ted Talk and his “Think B4U Move” program have helped many at-risk youths turn their lives around. He relates the game of chess to life. Don’t miss this opportunity to meet the man behind the book, play and movie. Eugene Brown will be signing his book and talking with attendees on August 1. He will also be at Studio 7 and in the Downtown Arts District the week of July 27-August 2 playing chess with those who wish to challenge the CHESSMAN.
Daybreak Writer's Workshop at Sunnyside Mercantile every Thursday from 6-7pm. Free and open to public. Poetry for all ages.
 
The Alamance Repertory Theatre Company presents The Wild Women of Winedale at ARTC Theatre on August 23 and 24 at 7:30 pm and August 25 at 3 pm. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for seniors/students, and can be bought at www.ARTCtheatre.comwww.brownpapertickets.com, or at the door. The door opens 30 minutes before the show. This comedy focuses on the three Wild women at crossroads in their lives. The feisty and fun-loving trio has supported each other through life's highs and lows for years. Fanny's turning 60, Willa's stressing over her job, and sister-in-law Johnnie Faye's losing her house show the ladies that it's never too late to follow another one of life's paths for a grand new adventure.
