From the desk of the Governor

I had the privilege of attending three events celebrating  women and International Women's Day (IWD) this month. The first was the Zonta Club of Rotorua's Women's Achievement Awards on 4th March where four local women were recognised for their contribution to the community: Angela Swann-Cronin (who many of you will have heard speak at the 2015 District Conference dinner), women's tennis legend Ruia Morrison-Davy, national sexual violence survivor advocate Louise Nicholas and artist and community advocate Jill Walker. Key note speaker was Lizzie Marvelly, singer and columnist Read more.

The second event was the IWD breakfast at Parliament jointly hosted by the Zonta Club of Wellington and UN Women Aotearoa. Key note speakers were Governor General, the Right Honourable Dame Patsy Reddy, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Women, the Honourable Paula Bennett and writer and feminist, Sandra Cooney. Sandra's speech looked at feminism 47 years on and her speech is available on the District 16 website.

The third event was the Zonta Club of Ashburton's IWD breakfast on Saturday 11th March with key note speaker Julia Hartley-Moore. Julia talked about her life and how she had been told at school that she "would never amount to much" but went on to have a very successful career.
Three very different events with one common theme - Women empowering women, which left all who attended feeling inspired. The first of the Area Meetings will be held in Whangarei on 26th March, another opportunity to be empowered and inspired and I hope to see you there.

Sophie Elliot Foundation: District Project

District 16 clubs voted to continue to work with the Sophie Elliot Foundation (SEF) as our District Project for 2016-2018. Our financial support enables the book Loves Me Not – How to keep Relationships Safe to be offered to year 12 students completing the Loves-Me Not workshops in schools. The support from Zonta is very visible on the SEF website.

In January a new video resource was added to the SEF resources. This video, introduced by Nigel Latta, explains how Loves-Me-Not teaches senior secondary school students about healthy relationships. The video encourages parents to talk with their teenage children about navigating relationships and avoiding relationship abuse.

At this point in the biennium clubs have donated $18,000 towards the project. Our commitment is $50,000 and clubs are asked to pay money raised into the District 16 account.

Volunteer Service Abroad Speakers

Volunteer Service Abroad (VSA) would like to offer returned volunteers as guest speakers to all Zonta clubs around the country.

Returned volunteers speak about their experiences in the different countries they have travelled to. They talk about the challenges and joys of working alongside cultures usually very different from their own and their efforts to make a valuable and long lasting contribution to those communities. They are all highly qualified in their different areas of expertise and are confident speakers. There are speakers currently available in Auckland, Christchurch, Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, Manawatu, the Nelson Region, Northland, Otego, Taranaki, Bay of Plenty, Waikato, Wellington and the Wairarapa.

Cindy Sherman Portrait Exhibition Fundraiser - Wellington.

UN Women National Committee Aotearoa New Zealand collaborated with the City Gallery Wellington to stage an International Women’s Day Event showcasing the works of Cindy Sherman. “Regarded as one of the most influential artists of her time, Cindy Sherman has for more than four decades produced work which has stimulated conversation on issues relevant to women.” This conversation was facilitated by actor, director and Funny Girl Madeleine Sami, poet Hera Lindsay Bird, ActionStation director Marianne Elliott, curator Claire Regnault and theatre director Nina Nawalowalo who each chose their favourite photograph to respond to.

Dame Margaret Sparrow and Christine Cook attended the event.
