From the desk of the Governor

Shaping our Future
With the business at the Zonta International Convention in Nice completed we are now embarking on the work in the new biennium. International President Sonia Honig Schough has focused on the Zonta mission "Empowering Women Worldwide through Service and Advocacy" as the guiding statement for 2016-2018. The District 16 Board held its first meeting in Auckland on 20th August 2016 and we are developing the District Goals to align with the International Goals approved in Nice. The District Board provides a mix of experience and fresh new ideas and we look forward to working with Clubs in "Shaping our Future".

2016-2018 Zonta International President

 
Sonja Honig Schough is from Sweden and has been a member of the Zonta club of Kungsbacka since 1993. The Zonta International website has more details in her  biography  and introductory  video.

2016-2018 Zonta International Liaison

 
Hsin Hsin Yang is the immediate past District Governor of District 31, Taiwan. She has been a member of the Zonta Club of Taipei II for 25 years. She works as the Correspondent/Manager of the Taiwan Bureau Agence France-Presse, a Paris-based international news agency. Her focus for the past biennium was expanding the visibility of Zonta International and she was involved with the inclusion of Mongolia Region into District 31.



Zonta Says "No" to Violence Against Women

Sophie Elliot Foundation: District Project

 
District 16 clubs voted to continue to work with the Sophie Elliot Foundation (SEF) as our District Project for 2016-2018. Our financial support enables the book Loves Me Not – How to keep Relationships Safe to be offered to year 12 students completing the Loves-Me Not workshops in schools. The support from Zonta is very visible on the SEF website.

A new MOU has been signed with the Sophie Elliot Foundation and we are looking forward to building on the excellent working relationship established in the last biennium.

International & District Award Recipients 

Maedeh with District 16 Amelia Earhart Committee Chair Irene King

Introducing our 2016 Amelia Earhart Fellow: Maedeh Amirpourmolla

Originally from Iran Maedeh is studying Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering at the University of Auckland read more. The biographies for all the Amelia Earhart fellows can be found on the Zonta International website in the membership area
Maedeh was presented with her certificate and AE Wings at the Biennium dinner on 20th August 2016.

District 16 Young Woman in Public Affairs awardee: Loren Skudder-Hill.

Loren is a 17 year old student from Rotorua who will shortly be embarking on a trip to  Shanghai, China where not only will she be studying medicine and human rights, but she will take up a position with Amnesty International as a Lead Global Human Rights Ambassador. This is a six year commitment which Loren describes as giving her the opportunity to her tackle some of the greatest human rights abuses within China and the greater Asia-Pacific region. She describes the opportunity as "ridiculously hard work but so fulfilling...the type of work that I live for".
 
Loren was nominated by the Zonta Club of Rotorua and was presented with her award at the Te Rununga Tea Rooms in the Rotorua Government Gardens on Saturday 3rd September.

District 16 Jane M Klausman awardee: Sarah-Michelle Washer.

Sarah-Michelle has been awarded the District 16 JMK award. We are yet to hear if she has been successful internationally.

Sarah- Michelle is from Ngaruawahia and is studying for a BMS (Hon)/LLB(Hon) at Waikato University, in her sixth year of study.
She is majoring in strategic management and commercial law. She is planning a career as a solicitor and to further develop the I.T.U. Learning Charitable Trust  she established in 2015,which seeks to aid the transition of students from high school to further study or employment. She is sponsored by the Zonta Club of Hamilton Waikato. At the time of receiving this award Sarah-Michelle was on a semester exchange at Yonsei University, South Korea through a Prime Minister's Scholarship for Asia.
