President's Welcome

Happy August Members!

Hope you’re all enjoying yourselves and reading this on the beach somewhere lovely and warm. Or alternatively lounging by the side of the open air pool with teenagers dive bombing next to you….!

Over the next few months we’re going to be designing a new logo. You don’t need to be able to draw just sketch up what you think it should include (or write it out) and we’ll get it worked into some designs or alternatively if you can draw, please do so! We’ll vote on later in the year. Some other WIs have created some excellent ones, more info below.

If you haven’t already found it please join our new private Facebook page. This is only for our members and is where we can share any info or ask any questions WI related or not. You’ll need to request to join but once extensive validation checks (aka do we recognise you!) have been carried out then you’ll be accepted. Search for South Tonbridge WI in the search box.

Hope many of you can make our August non-meeting meeting although I will be on my holibobs so wont be there to watch the WI staggering around the park!

See you in September,
Becky

Members August Meet-up: Picnic in the Park!

Tuesday, 9 August
19:30 - 21:30  Haysden Park

We don't have a regular meeting in August as so many people are away on summer holidays. However, for those of us still in town, we want to get together! We're having a picnic on the sports grounds - same regular time and date. Please bring your own drinks and nibbles. Anyone have any lawn games? Bring those too! Check out the map below for where we'll be hanging out.

If it rains, we will meet in Wetherspoons. you will get an email on the day if we are changing venue.

Previous Meeting Minutes

Committee Updates

  • In July three of our committee members, Laura, Karen and Katherine, took part in the President and the Secretary training at the local Federation office in Pembury, Ethel Hunt Lodge. As we are a new WI it is interesting to meet other WI committee members and also hear from the Feds how the WI operations are carried out.

  • We’re exploring a WI Discount Card for Tonbridge businesses.

  • NFWI Trustee Nominations – only applicable to current regional Fed Trustees, of which STWI do not have any within their membership. Not to be progressed.

STWI Logo Competition

We would love to have a logo that really demonstrates who we are. We are unique and fabulous! Have a think and start drawing or designing. Bring your ideas to the September meeting, or send them in to us to share with the rest of the group. Here are a few examples of other WI logos:

NFWI 2016-2017 Resolutions

At our Annual Meeting in May we voted on the National Federation resolutions that we supported. At the NFWI annual meeting in June, those resolutions were launched as part of the NFWI annual campaign.

Have you been inspired to submit a resolution? The NFWI are now accepting resolution submissions for the 2016/17 resolutions process. Any member can propose a resolution for consideration - we just need to submit them by 14 September. Look for a further email with details on this in a few days.

Walking Group Visits Lavender Fields

On a blazing hot Sunday afternoon 11 of us had a wonderful afternoon at the Downderry Lavender Farm we were treated to an hours lecture on the intricacies of growing Lavender. Who knew there was so much that could be achieved for example paring a short white with a tall long eared  blue lavender plant. So many varieties not enough garden space!  After a refreshing cuppa most of us managed to find something to spend our money on in the little gift shop. It you haven't been it is well worth a visit.

Subgroup Update

Book Group
The first meeting of The Book Club was very chatty, not always about the book, Dissolution, or other titles.  Members could contribute as much or as little as they wanted.  Different genres were discussed, although none were dismissed, so we will embrace fiction and non-fiction.

Next meeting is 24 August and the book they will be discussing is The Improbability of Love, by Hannah Rothschild. See Ruth or Doris at the meeting for details of the venue (it will be someone’s house each time) or email stwibookclub@gmail.com.  Anyone is welcome to come along.

Supper Club is meeting at OneSixty on 16 August – places still available so contact sarajwright@hotmail.co.uk to sign up.

Walking group has scheduled 3 walks in August, please keep up to date with the calendar and the subgroup page of the website. You can always contact the group at walkingstwi@gmail.com.
