South Tonbridge          11 April 2016

President's Welcome

Roll up, roll up! South Tonbridge’s Ceilidh is nearly here – 29th April!! Our quiz night was such fun that another STWI event was only a matter of time. Like the quiz night the night is open to friends and family too, so please bring along a mate or a date. Tickets will be available at our next meeting or if you can’t make it get in touch with us and we’ll sort it out, more details below.
Hopefully you’ve all seen the email I sent out regarding our AGM at the May meeting and a request for committee members, we are still short by 1 so please get in touch – it is a lot of fun! Check out what it takes to be on the committee with our list of roles.
I also hope everyone likes our new venue which I thought was much cosier. The new arrangements mean there is no washing up (NO WASHING UP!) or setting up/clearing away of tables and chairs which makes it more relaxed. Lots of thanks to Lesley Penney on the committee who has organised all of this, I think it has been a big improvement.
Looking forward to seeing you all on Tuesday.
Take care,  Becky

NEW VENUE: Angel Centre
We will be meeting at the Angel Centre, Riverside room, for all future meetings!

Members' Meeting: Women in the Media: From Pop to Porn

Tuesday, 12 April; 19:30 - 21:30
Angel Centre, TN9 1SF

Vivienne came to Mediawatch-UK after 17 years in the book publishing industry where she handled the publicity, brand building and crisis management for a wide range of authors and companies.  It was concern for the media that her children were exposed to which led her to Mediawatch-UK and made her think seriously about the media in this country.

Committee Updates

We don’t have the meeting room at the Angel Centre in December so alternatives are being considered. The new Fire Station pop-up is suggested but member approval needed for additional cost.
Waiting to have a date confirmed by Tonbridge School for the District Carol Service in December.

Read or take home a copy of the West Kent News, a monthly magazine about our federation events, at any membership meeting.

Calling All Gardeners

The Tonbridge Community Gardeners are looking for volunteers to help get the Angel Garden, Angel Square area and new Sensory Garden ready for summer.  Come along from 1pm on Sunday 17th and/or Sunday 24th April to lend a hand.  For updates and to see how you can get involved, follow "Angel Community Garden" on Facebook.

2016 Resolution Voting

Every year members propose, and select, resolutions that could form the basis for NFWI campaigns and activity. At the meeting this week we will be voting on the final 2 resolutions:

1. Avoid food waste, address food poverty
The WI calls on all supermarkets to sign up to a voluntary agreement to avoid food waste, thereby passing surplus food on to charities thus helping to address the issue of increasing food poverty in the UK.

2. Appropriate care in hospitals for people with dementia
We call upon HM Government and the NHS to provide facilities to enable carers to stay with people with Alzheimer's disease and dementia that have been admitted into hospital.
