South Tonbridge       11 September 2016

President's Welcome

Hello everyone
We've got a great speaker for September who April and I saw at the War and Peace Show a few years ago. Jude is very knowledgeable and entertaining and I'm sorry to miss it. I'll be on my holidays for September and Laura our 'Super Secretary' will be chairing our meeting instead.
We have a new private Facebook group which 44 of you have already joined. We've been using this quite a lot to ask questions and pass on information about lots of things, not just WI related. We shared recently the sad news that our member, Alison Batchelor, has died. It was a sudden and unexpected death although she had been ill for a while. We've written a bit more about Alison below.
Our grand plans for the District Christmas Carol Concert were well and truly squashed when another WI decided they were not prepared to take part in the current form. In the interests of diplomacy we have changed the venue and it will now be held in St. Saviour's on Dry Hill Road. Tickets will be for WI members only, no friends or family. We were really disappointed with this but we are considering a STWI Community Carol Service next year instead. We only have limited tickets and it will be first come first served. More info below and at the meeting.
Have fun at September's meeting all and I'm sorry to miss it!
Take care,

Members Meeting: Jude, Ministry of Food Advisor, WWII re-enactor

Tuesday, 13 September
19:30 - 21:30  Angel Centre, TN9 1SF

As a hobby, Jude has become fascinated by the experiences of women living in Britain during the Second World War and how their lives were affected by the war. She enjoys showing this across the country through her role as a WW2 Re-enactor. Many women played a vital part on the Home front. Individually it may have been a very small part, but when put together, this had an important effect on both moral and the war effort. Dressed in clothing of the era, Jude will be stepping into her wartime role as a Ministry of Food Advisor and will demonstrator two examples of wartime recipes.

Gin Tour and Tasting

A jolly little band of STWI ladies set off by train on a very warm evening, bound for Anno Gin Distillery in Marden. Despite getting slightly lost we duly arrived at our destination and were warmly welcomed with a glorious cool G&T each by Norman & his wife who introduced us to Patience the beautiful copper still which is responsible for all the magic! Norman was an informative & entertaining guide to the gin making process & we enjoyed hearing the Anno story before the tasting began in earnest. We tried 5 different artisan gins in a variety of ways, hotly debating our likes & dislikes & becoming increasingly merry as the tasting continued......! It was all lots of fun & I think we'd all recommend Anno gins, though I still prefer mine in the traditional way with some tonic, neat gin is a bit of an acquired taste as we discovered!
