Journey To Growth Public Quarterly Meeting - Q2


The 2016 2nd Quarter public meeting was held on July 14th at the Spring Valley Community Center, where nearly 100 attendees networked and received updates on a variety of Journey to Growth initiatives.

Industry Round tables:
Economic committee co-chair, Elaine J. Garry, CEO and President of People’s Energy Cooperative, updated the audience on the latest industry round table on Manufacturing. The third round table will be held in the fall and cover J2G’s 3rd target sector Computer Systems & Design. The first industry round table on Food & Dairy was held in March. For more information click here

Regional Community Video Project:
Bill Spitzer, co-chair of the Regional Community Video project announced that the project was awarded a $5,000 grant by SMIF (Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation). This project focuses on High School student submissions where students create a video introducing their community.  
A scholarship and internship will be awarded for the top video produced. The project is in partnership with SE MN Together. Click here to learn more.  

"We Are More" Traveling Exhibition:
Project Lead, Nicole Nfonoyim – Hara provided updates on the WAM (We Are More) traveling exhibition. Under the Diversity & Inclusion Committee, the WAM Exhibition will highlight economic diversity in a visual, conversation provoking way throughout the region. The planned start date of the tour is September 18th in Rochester. Proposed exhibit sites and additional information can be found here.

RYPN (Regional Young Professionals Network):
A Journey to Growth endorsed initiative, RYPN (Regional Young Professionals Network) got creative and asked the crowd for names of individuals that should be included in RYPN. Project leads Ross Ballinger and Sunny Prabhakar explained the goal of RYPN is to connect, empower and support young professionals across the southeast Minnesota region. Workforce Activity in the Region:
Last but not least, attendees heard a progress report from J2G  implementation partner, Julie Brock, representing the Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation and the workforce activity supported and led by their efforts throughout the region. Read the complete report here.

CEDA Director of Marketing, Joya Stetson remarked, “Our goal was for our exclusively invited participants  to  have a heightened awareness of proximity to resources, incentive programs, developable real estate, infrastructure access and other important information.”

Nearly 40 attendees boarded a Rochester City Lines luxury charter bus on Thursday, July 21st for the first ever Regional Development Tour. Partners CEDA (Community Economic Development Associates) and Journey To Growth developed a pilot project tour that visited four communities; Stewartville, Blooming Prairie, Dodge Center and Byron.

43% of Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce Members surveyed indicated Workforce as the biggest challenge they face. In response, the Rochester Chamber of Commerce Foundation with J2G, DMC, and other community partners are building part of the solution. will be an online tool connecting people to companies, jobs, and resources in the southeast Minnesota region. As a regional tool, job seekers won’t have to sift through sponsored or irrelevant employment opportunities. In a recent survey, 94%  of respondents identified company culture as either important or essential in their work environment. will be an essential tool for companies to showcase their unique culture and benefits to attract and retain the perfect fit. will also connect job seekers with the resources they need, whether help with building a résumé, or finding continuing education necessary for the promotion they seek. Nationally, a mere 31.3% of people report being engaged in their jobs. We aim to help people find the right talent fit through emphasizing both job skills and company culture.
