Learning About Diabetes

November is American Diabetes month. With 29.1 million people in the United States having diabetes, there's a real possibility that you know someone affected by this serious health condition. With diabetes, blood sugar (glucose) levels are consistently high. Over time, this can damage the body and lead to many other problems. High levels of blood sugar can cause changes that lead to a hardening of the blood vessels (atherosclerosis) and atherosclerosis is directly linked to cardiovascular disease.

Researchers have also discovered that, in addition to high blood sugar levels, there is scientific evidence linking diabetes and cholesterol. Unfortunately, people with diabetes are more prone to having unhealthy cholesterol levels, which contributes to cardiovascular disease. People with diabetes often have high triglyceride and low HDL levels. Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil can help lower triglycerides and Apo proteins (markers of diabetes), and raise HDL. According to the American Heart Association, by taking steps to manage cholesterol, individuals can reduce their chance of cardiovascular disease and premature death. Garlic, chromium, alpha lipoic acid are items that help with blood sugar, as well as fish oils.
