February 2019
Moon Shadows
The full moon rose in spectacular splendour on the 21st of January, displaying a lunar eclipse only visible in the Northern Hemisphere. Despite the lack of an eclipse back at home, our lunar neighbour really pulled out all the stops as is slowly lifted its mighty head to stare across the bay of Saldanha.
Watching the full moon reflected in all its glory across the darkened bay of Saldanha conjures up images of ancient mariners sailing the seven seas in days of yore. Has any Hollywood pirate movie been made, without depicting some tranquil scene of an old ship drifting gently on the surface of an unknown lagoon, while a full moon subtly enhances the mood?
This is not wistful Hollywood substance or a scene from some childhood fantasy, but the reality of beauty on a West Coast evening.

Lambert’s Bay’s Bird Island
If you love nature and more specifically birds, then no visit to the West Coast is complete without having a look-see at Bird Island in Lamberts Bay. Cape Nature has built a unique bird hide which allows for close-up viewing of a colony of Cape gannets that gather here in their teeming thousands.
From a few meters away you can experience and get the feeling and vibe of this huge mass of birds as they squabble for space and territory, fly to and fro, take off and crash land, preen themselves and one another, and generally just celebrate the joie de vivre of life.
Bird Island is only 145 km from Pikkie Cottage, making it a perfect day out from Saldanha to explore the West Coast.
