- New Patio Regulations for 2022

Dear Kensington member businesses,
For those of you planning patios this summer, I just received this information from the City about new patio regulations for 2022:
City Administration is excited to support businesses through the upcoming 2022 Seasonal Patio Extension Program. The 2022 program is a transition year that aims to address the challenges identified over the past two years while continuing to support businesses and build on the successes of the program.
Attached are the Guidelines for Seasonal Patios Located on Public Property. The guidelines outline the application process, location specifications, submission requirements and general requirements for this year’s seasonal patio program.
Key changes for the upcoming year from the prior two years include:
- The primary direction to have seasonal patios located in the parking lane wherever possible. This is to ensure that the city’s mobility network remains accessible for Calgarians of all ages and abilities by maintaining a straight, continuous and level pedestrian path of travel. Unlike the prior two years, temporary pedestrian detours with ramps down onto the parking lane will not be setup by The City of Calgary. As 2022 is a transition year, a pedestrian detour in the parking lane, that is at the same elevation as the sidewalk/without ramps, can be considered to provide flexibility for this year.
- The application process has changed where the applicant submits their application to patios@calgary.ca with a plan and elevation drawings of the patio setup the applicant is proposing to construct. The City of Calgary will review the application, distribute it to potential impacted parties and provide confirmation on the approval of the proposed patio setup.
- Fees for seasonal patios will be charged at $7.35/sq. ft. annually which is the same fee as the Council approved sidewalk café fee. In order to continue to support businesses as we transition from the COVID-19 temporary patio program where fees were waived, the noted rate has been reduced from street use fees, parking loss fee and administrative charges by approximately 50%.
To apply for your 2022 seasonal patio on public property, please email patios@calgary.ca. If you have any questions you can email patios@calgary.ca or call (587) 573-1746.
