Feature Highlight: Blue Book

The Blue Book feature in Open Dental can help make treatment plan estimates more accurate for your patients on out-of-network plans. Learn how to enable and use this feature here.
New Feature Highlights
For the full list of new features by version, please visit the versions page in our manual.
New Features in Stable Version 20.4 include the following.

Major Features: New eServices Features
  • A Mass Email signature must be created before emails can be sent. A typical signature would be your practice name and mailing address. Signatures can be plain text or HTML.
  • When using Automated Messaging (eReminders/eConfirmations, Automated Thank-Yous, and Arrivals), the [NameF] field will use the patient’s preferred name or the first name if no preferred name exists.
  • eClipboard: Treatment Plans can be added directly to the check-in checklist while a patient is still in their eClipboard session.
New Family Module Features
  • Patient-specific time patterns can be set for recall appointments using the Time Pattern Override box.
  • Multiple downgrades can be set for a procedure code based on criteria (for example, a different downgrade for molars vs. second molars on crowns).
New Account Module Features
  • An existing credit card on file can be set up and used for recurring charges.
  • Adding production to Dynamic Payment Plans is now even easier. Instead of separate buttons to add Production or Adjustments, a single “Add” button will pull up available production (procedures and adjustments) that can be added.
New Chart Module Features
  • Lab case instructions can now use Auto Notes as well as Quick Notes.
  • Exam notes added to the perio exams. Be sure to add an exam before entering notes.
  • Show Automated Commlogs option can be unchecked to hide commlog entries that have been automatically generated (e.g. Created by the Recall List or Web Sched). This can be unchecked in the chart module show tab, Account Module show tab, and Edit Appointment window. When unchecked in one area, commlogs will be hidden in all areas. This checkbox is user-specific and will not affect other users.
New Reports Features: Features for multi-location practices
  • eConnector status added to Central Enterprise Management Tool (CEMT) window.
  • After updating via the File Copier, Open Dental will re-connect to the same database as before.
  • Payload Monitor added for Middle Tier users.
  • Enterprise setup option to disable Refresh while typing in Patient Select window to reduce database load. Users can now click the enter key after typing to search and enter again to select a patient without using the mouse.
Features for users in Canada

See more details on these features in the 20.4 version highlights blog post.

In Beta Version 20.5
  • Sales tax is automated.
  • Discount plans have effective dates.
  • New paint types for retained root, space maintainers, and text indicators on a tooth.
  • The calendar has a 3, 4, and 6-month jump.
  • The appointment confirmation list has a group family option like the recall list.
