President's Message

Life changes quickly. And sometimes we don’t know when it will return to normal, or what our new ‘normal’ will be. I spent some time looking through family photos this month. You know—the old school kind that you can hold and shuffle through your fingers. Most of these pictures were of times when my family gathered together: baptisms, graduations, weddings, funerals, birthday parties. As a species we seem to like each others company—at least in limited doses. In all these pictures, people I knew and loved were smiling, laughing, singing, dancing, talking…activities that require being close to one another.

Those options are closed to us for the moment, and we are uncertain when gathering will be possible again. But we miss being with you and learning together. That’s why the Executive Committee has decided to invest in a Zoom subscription so we can meet online. We are working on this now and will share the details with you as soon as we know them.

I do hope you are all healthy and safe and pursuing your passion for writing or reading mysteries. Every cloud has its silver-lining, and perhaps many more books may be born because of this confinement.

A housekeeping note: We decided to put our Tips and Tricks and our What are you reading sections of the newsletter on hiatus. If you’d like to see them back, let us know

May you have a healthy, safe, and productive April despite the challenges of the outside world.

Luanne C. Brown
President

Marketing in the Pandemic Age
Our May program will be a panel on to give advice on marketing your book from veteran marketers and will include a discussion of how to adapt traditional marketing techniques to these difficult times. You may have heard of our first speaker, Penny Sansevari a book marketing guru with many books on the subject to her credit. Her latest book is “How to Sell Books by the Truckload on Amazon.” Penny will be featured in the first 30 minutes of our meeting and will take questions. Then we will speak to two of our own: Alice Boatwright and Jeffery Briggs who will both present their marketing success strategies and will be available for questions as well. Stay tuned for more details about this online meeting.

We will make decisions about the format for upcoming programs based on both the guidelines set by the Governor for gatherings as well as health safety concerns expressed by our membership. Please check our our website for updated information.

Good News
We have received two grants from SinC National. One grant is for a speaker for an upcoming program in 2020 and the other grant is for a vendor table at the PNWA Conference in the fall.
